J1939 (CAN) Datalink schematic

A CID 0247 FMI 09 is recorded when the operator Main Display module does not receive expected SAE J1939 Datalink information. For example, Engine RPM information is not received from other electronic control modules through the SAE J1939 Datalink. This diagnostic code causes readouts that are dependent upon the SAE J1939 Datalink information to indicate abnormal values.

Possible causes of this diagnostic code are:

  • Poor machine harness electrical connections.r

  • A SAE J1939 Datalink circuit shorted to ground.

  • A SAE J1939 Datalink circuit shorted to +Battery.

  • Open SAE J1939 Datalink circuit.

Ensure that CID 0247 FMI 09 is on hold. Ensure that the "SERV CODE" indicator shows "SERV CODE".

Note: An ECM which uses the SAE J1939 Datalink may have failed.

Test Step 1. CHECK FOR ADDITIONAL RELATED DIAGNOSTIC CODES.

  1. Ensure that all electronic control modules that use the Cat data link are connected.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Acknowledge any active diagnostic codes that are currently displayed on the message center.

  1. Verify that no other related, and active, diagnostic codes are present.

Expected Result:

No other related, and active, diagnostic codes are present.

Results:

  • YES - No other related active diagnostic codes are present, but CID 0247 FMI 09 is still active. Go to test step 3.

  • NO - Other related active diagnostic codes are present, and CID 0247 FMI 09 is still active. Go to test step 2.

Test Step 2. CLEAR ALL ACTIVE RELATED DIAGNOSTIC CODES.

  1. Perform all required Test Procedures to clear all other related, active diagnostic codes.

Expected Result:

All related active diagnostic codes are cleared, and CID 0247 FMI 09, is no longer active.

Results:

  • YES - All other related active diagnostic codes are cleared, and CID 0247 FMI 09 is no longer active.

Repair: The diagnostic codes do not exist at this time. Return the machine to normal operations.

    STOP

  • NO - All other related active diagnostic codes are cleared, but CID 0247 FMI 09 is still active. Go to test step 3.

Test Step 3. INSPECT THE HARNESS CONNECTIONS.

  1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Inspect all Cat Datalink harness connections connecting to all ECM modules in the machine. Make sure that the connectors are clean and tight.

  1. Check the mating of the connector.

  1. Check the wires at the connector.

  1. Check each wire for nicks and/or signs of abrasion in the insulation.

  1. Check for moisture at the connector.

  1. Check for dirty contacts and/or corroded contacts.

  1. Check each pin and check each socket.

Expected Result:

The machine harness is correct.

Results:

  • YES - The machine harness is correct. Go to Test Step 4.

  • NO - The machine harness is not correct.

Repair: Repair or replace the machine harness.

    Go to Test Step 7

Test Step 4. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO GROUND.

  1. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in th OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the machine harnesses from all electronic control modules that use the SAE J1939 Datalink.

  1. At the Main Display module harness connector, measure resistance from the SAE J1939 Datalink contacts 11 and 12 to all other contacts on the connector. Repeat the SAE J1939 Datalink contacts 11 and 12 resistance measurements, but to frame ground this time.

Expected Result:

All resistances are more than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • YES - All resistances are more than 5000 ohms. The SAE J1939 Datalink circuits are correct. Go to Test Step 5

  • NO - A resistance measured less than 5000 ohms. The SAE J1939 Datalink harness has failed.

Repair: There is a short to ground in the harness. Repair or replace the harness.

    Go to Test Step 7.

Test Step 5. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO +BATTERY.

  1. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

  1. All related control modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.

  1. At the Main Display module harness connector, measure resistance from SAE J1939 Datalink contacts 11 and 12 to all other contacts in the connector. Make sure, specially, to check resistance to the +Battery contact 1 in the connector.

Expected Result:

All resistances are more than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • YES - All resistances are more than 5000 ohms. The SAE J1939 Datalink circuits are correct. Go to Test Step 6.

  • NO - A resistance measured less than 5000 ohms. The SAE J1939 Datalink harness has failed.

Repair: There is a short to +Battery in the harness. Repair or replace the harness.

    Go to Test Step 7

Test Step 6. CHECK FOR AN OPEN HARNESS.

  1. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

  1. All related control modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.

  1. Check the continuity of the SAE J1939 Datalink circuit in the machine harness.

  1. At the Main Display module harness connector: Measure resistance from SAE J1939 Datalink contacts 11 and 12 to all other SAE J1939 Datalink contacts on each related ECM on the machine.

Expected Result:

All resistances are less than 5 ohms.

Results:

  • YES - All resistances are less than 5 ohms. The SAE J1939 Datalink circuits are correct. Go to Test Step 7

  • NO - A resistance is more than 5 ohms. The SAE J1939 Datalink harness has failed.

Repair: A SAE J1939 Datalink circuit is open in the harness. Repair or replace the harness.

    Go to Test Step 7

Test Step 7. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS.

  1. Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are clean and fully seated. Observe that the clips on each connector are securely fastened.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Operate the machine.

  1. Clear all inactive diagnostic codes.

  1. Check the status of CID 0247 FMI 09 diagnostic code.

Expected Result:

CID 0247 FMI 09 code is no longer active.

Results:

  • YES - The CID 0247 FMI 09 code is no longer active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. Return machine to normal operationSTOP

  • NO - The CID 0247 FMI 09 code is still active. The cause for the code has not been corrected.

Repair: If you have not inspected the harness connectors in a previous Test Step, do that now. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors. Check the wires for damage to the insulation caused by excessive heat, battery acid, or chafing.Perform a 45 N (10 lb.) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the sensor circuit.Perform a "wiggle test" on the sensor circuit of the machine wiring harness, using the Caterpillar Electronic Technician service tool. The "wiggle test" can be used to detect open or shorted connections in the machine wiring harness.Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are fully seated. Observe that the clips for each connector are securely fastened. Perform Test Step 7 again. If the problem has NOT been found, and the original code is still active, the Scraper Transmission ECM may have failed.Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your Dealership Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar, or with the Dealer Solutions Network. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the ECM needs to be replaced, see Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
