Can Data Link connections |
A CID 0588 is associated with communication malfunctions between the machine ECM and the Monitor Display ECM, over the Can Data Link.
An FMI 14 means the two ECMs are communicating, but the machine ECM is not receiving expected operating parameter data from the Monitor Display ECM.
Possible causes for the diagnostic code are:
- The software that is installed on the Messenger is incorrect.
- The software that is installed on the Machine ECM is incorrect.
- A new ECM has been installed that is not the correct part.
Note: Ensure that the CID 0588 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.
Test Step 1. VERIFY THE HARDWARE AND THE SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS
- Verify that the following information is correct:
- The part number of the installed software for the Machine ECM
- The part number of the installed software for the Messenger
- The part number of the Machine ECM
- The part number of the Messenger
Note: Contact your dealerships Technical Communicator for the correct part numbers of the hardware and the correct part numbers for the configuration software for your machine.
- The part number of the installed software for the Machine ECM
Expected Result:
All hardware and software part numbers are correct.
Results:
- OK - All hardware and software part numbers are correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.
- NOT OK - All hardware and software part numbers are NOT correct.
Repair: Replace the hardware or software that is incorrect with the correct version. For flashing software, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program". For replacing ECM modules, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace"

Test Step 2. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
- Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
- Operate the machine.
- Check the status of the CID 0588 FMI 14 diagnostic code.
Expected Result:
The CID 0588 FMI 14 diagnostic code is not active.
Results:
- OK - The CID 0588 FMI 14 diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code could have been caused by a start-up problem with one of the ECM controls. Resume normal operation.STOP
- NOT OK - The CID 0588 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected.
Repair: Repeat this procedure again and verify that the information is correct. If the cause of the problem is not found, the ECM that has activated the diagnostic code may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealerships Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECM that has activated the diagnostic code. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
