Connections of the Cat Data Link |
This diagnostic code is associated with the communication across the Cat Data Link between the Power Train ECM and the Implement ECM. The FMI 14 means that the Power Train ECM is not receiving parameter information that is expected from the Implement ECM.
Some conditions that can cause this diagnostic code are listed below:
- The software that is installed on the Implement ECM is incorrect.
- The software that is installed on the Power Train ECM is incorrect.
- A new ECM has been installed and the new ECM does not have the correct part number.
The Power Train ECM is the only control that has activated a diagnostic code for communication over the Cat Data Link. If multiple diagnostic codes are active for communication with the Implement ECM, check for problems in the connectors or problems near the Implement ECM. The problem may be with the Implement ECM.
Test Step 1. Verify the hardware and the software part numbers
- Verify that the following information is correct:
- The part number of the software for the Power Train ECM
- The part number of the software for the Implement ECM
- The part number of the Power Train ECM
- The part number of the Implement ECM
Note: Contact your technical communicator for the correct part numbers of the hardware and the correct part numbers for the software.
Expected Result:
All of the part numbers are correct.
Results:
- YES - All of the part numbers are correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.
- NO - All of the part numbers are not correct. The part number for an ECM may be incorrect. The incorrect configuration software may be installed.
Repair: Replace the incorrect ECM with an ECM that has the correct part number. Flash the correct configuration software. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program".
STOP
Test Step 2. Check the status of the diagnostic code
- Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
- Check the status of the CID 0596 - FMI 14 diagnostic code.
Expected Result:
The CID 0596 - FMI 14 diagnostic code is not active.
Results:
- YES - The CID 0596 - FMI 14 diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code could have been caused by a problem with one of the control modules during start-up. Resume normal operation.
STOP
- NO - The CID 0596 - FMI 14 diagnostic code is active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected.
Repair: Verify that all possible causes of the diagnostic code have been investigated. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the diagnostic code remains active or repeatedly activated and no cause can be found, flash the Implement ECM with the latest version of software. Ensure that you have the latest version of software for your specific machine and ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program".
If the problem persists contact the technical communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar.
