Start By:
a. Remove the front suspension cylinder. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Suspension Cylinder (Front) - Remove".

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Purge the suspension cylinder of oil and nitrogen. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Suspension Cylinder (Front) - Purge and Charge".
- Install the suspension cylinder in Tooling (A). The weight of the suspension cylinder is approximately 145 kg (320 lb).

- Remove valve block (5). Remove the O-ring seal from valve block (5) .
- Remove relief valve (9) and the washer from head (2) .
- Remove 18 bolts (3), the washers and two cover assemblies (13) from head (2) .
- Remove two O-ring seals (14) from two cover assemblies (13) .
- Put alignment marks on rod assembly (4), head (2) and cylinder assembly (1) for assembly purposes.
- Use Tooling (A) in order to remove cylinder assembly (1) from rod assembly (4) .
- Remove wear ring (6), plate (7) and ball (8) from rod assembly (4) .
- Remove rod assembly (4) from Tooling (A) .
- Remove head (2) from rod assembly (4) .
- Remove ring (17) and O-ring seal (18) from head (2) .
- Remove U-cup seal (15) and lip seal (16) from head (2) .
- Remove two lock rings (10) from rod assembly (4) .
- Use a suitable press to remove bearing (11) from rod assembly (4) .
- Remove lubrication fitting (12) .
- Repeat Step 14 through Step 16 for the head end bearing assembly.
