This procedure requires a 0 to 50 mm (0 to 2 inch) outside micrometer and a depth micrometer that has 45 mm (1.77 inch) of travel.

Note: The tire, the rim and Duo Cone seals must be removed. The procedure that follows should be performed in the horizontal position, but the capability to rotate the wheel must be maintained.

  1. Measure the thickness of retainer (A) with the outside micrometer. Measure the retainer at three places near the three small gauge holes (8) . Record the average of these three measurements.

  1. Apply lubricant to wheel bearings (4) . Assemble wheel bearings (4) , and wheel (3) on spindle (1) .

  1. Install hub (5) and retainer (A) without shims (7) . Lubricate the threads of four bolts (6) . Install four bolts (6) in an equally spaced pattern. Install the first bolt on the top side. See Illustration 2.

  1. By using a crisscross pattern, tighten the bolts in incremental steps until the torque of 170 ± 15 N·m (125 ± 11 lb ft) is reached.

  1. Rotate the wheel by one revolution. Torque bolts (6) again in order to make sure that the bolts are tightened to 170 ± 15 N·m (125 ± 11 lb ft).

  1. Loosen four bolts (6) so that the wheel can slide a slight amount downward on the wheel bearings.

  1. By using a crisscross pattern, tighten the bolts in incremental steps until the torque of 90 ± 5 N·m (65 ± 4 lb ft) is reached.

  1. Rotate the wheel by one revolution. Make sure that bolts (6) are tightened to 90 ± 5 N·m (65 ± 4 lb ft).

  1. To measure the distance from the outside face of retainer (A) to the end of the spindle, use the depth micrometer. Measure the distance through the 3 gauge holes (8) in the retainer.

  1. Record the average of the three depth measurements. Subtract the average thickness of the retainer that was measured in Step 1 from the average depth that was measured in Step 9. The difference is the thickness of shims (7) . The thickness of shims (7) must be within ± 0.025 mm (.0010 inch) of the difference.

  1. Remove bolts (6) , retainer (A) , hub (5) , and wheel (3) . Assemble the Duo-Cone seals on spindle (1) . Make sure that all of the contact surfaces are clean and dry before installing the seals.

ReferenceFor more information on installing Duo-Cone seals, refer to the service manual module Disassembly and Assembly, "Duo-Cone Conventional Seals - Install" for the machine that is being serviced.

  1. Install 16 bolts (6) , retainer (A) , shims (7) , hub (5) , and wheel (3) . Torque the 16 bolts to 900 ± 100 N·m (660 ± 75 lb ft).
