Caterpillar continues to provide engines that meet regulations of various agencies around the world. Each engine is certified to meet emission regulations by using the proper elements which include after-treatment devices. Unauthorized changes to any of these components may cause an engine to not be compliant with emission regulations. This is considered as tampering. Tampering with an engine can make the reliability and durability of the engine decrease.
Some Caterpillar engines require after-treatment devices. After-treatment devices certify the engines with the correct emission regulations. After-treatment devices include the following.
- Catalysts for Diesel Oxidation
- Diesel Particulate Filters
The after-treatment devices remove regulated emissions from the exhaust gas after the gas has left the combustion chamber. After-treatment devices are very necessary and communicated in the following documents.
- Callouts on the face of orders for dealers
- Literature for the Product
- Price lists
- Labels for the Emissions of the Engine
- An After-treatment Required label is also placed on the removable boot that covers the turbocharger inlet.
- An additional reminder is sent to the OEM in order to include the specified after-treatment devices during engine installation into a chassis.
Caterpillar must inform customers and dealers that modifying or removing of any after-treatment device is against the law. Dealers or the OEM might be penalized up to $32,500 per engine for violating the emission regulations. Individuals can be penalized up to $2,750 for interfering or disabling after-treatment devices.
The emission regulations have been increasing around the world. Caterpillar wants all customers to obey the emission regulation laws.
