Display Area Of Caterpillar Monitoring System

The display area contains MID 081, CID 0623, and FMI 05.

(1) First display. (2) Module identifier (MID). (3) Service code indicator. (4) Second display. (5) Component identifier (CID). (6) Failure mode identifier (FMI).

Use the following procedure to troubleshoot the service code information. Connect the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool to the service connector for the monitor at the fuse panel.

  1. Place the Caterpillar Monitoring System in service mode (mode 3). In order to place the Caterpillar Monitoring System in service mode, press and hold the mode switch of the control service tool. Release the mode switch while the mode number "-3-" is shown on the display.

Note: The diagnostic scrolling mode may be entered in order to see the service codes, but the service codes can be more easily diagnosed by using the service mode. The service mode allows the service codes to be placed on hold for further investigation. The service mode also allows the service code to be cleared when the problem has been fixed.

  1. A service code is shown. The service code is on hold at this time. The display toggles between showing MID (2) and CID (5) and FMI (6). Screen (1) displays "---" when the service codes are not displayed and while you are in the service mode.

  1. In order to view all the service codes, scroll through the service codes. In order to scroll through the service codes, press and hold the scroll switch of the control service tool. The display momentarily shows MID (2), CID (5) and FMI (6) for each service code. The word "End" is shown after the last service code in the list.

  1. Place the desired service code on hold. In order to place the service code on hold, release the scroll switch when the desired service code is shown.

  1. Use the information from the MID in order to determine the ECM that is generating the service code. If the MID is not 081, see Electrical System Schematic, "Module Identifier (MID) Table" of the machine that is being serviced. Use the table to determine the ECM that has detected the diagnostic code. Then see the service manual module for that electronic control. If the MID is 081, use this Service Manual Module to troubleshoot the diagnostic code that generated the service code.

  1. Observe service code indicator (3). In service mode, the service code indicator functions as a diagnostic code indicator.

    • If diagnostic code indicator (3) shows "SERV CODE", then the fault that caused the service code that is shown is currently present.

    • If diagnostic code indicator (3) is OFF, then the fault that caused the service code that is shown is not present at this time.

  1. Refer to the test procedure in Testing and Adjusting in order to troubleshoot the service code with the same CID and the same FMI.

  1. After a service code is corrected, clear the service code. In order to clear the service code, momentarily press the clear switch of the service tool while the diagnostic code is on hold. After clearing, the display advances to the next available service code.

  1. Repeat Steps 2 through 8 for the remaining service codes. Return to the normal mode when you are finished. In order to return to the normal mode, press and hold the mode switch of the control service tool. Release the mode switch when mode "-0-" is shown on the display.
