NOTICE |
---|
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material found in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations". Failure to do so could result in damage to the cooling systems components. |
NOTICE |
---|
Mixing Cat Extended Life Coolant (ELC) with other products reduces the effectiveness of the coolant and shortens coolant life. Use only Caterpillar products or commercial products that have passed the Caterpillar EC-1 specifications for premixed or concentrate coolants. Use only Cat Extender with Cat ELC. Failure to follow these recommendations could result in damage to the cooling systems components. If ELC cooling system contamination occurs, refer to Operation and Maintenance, "Extended Life Coolant (ELC)" under the topic ELC Cooling System Contamination. This machine was factory filled with Cat Extended Life Coolant. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
If the coolant in the machine is changed to the Extended Life Coolant (ELC) from another type of coolant, refer to Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Cat Extended Life Coolant (ELC)".
- Allow the engine to cool.
- Loosen the pressure cap slowly in order to release pressure. Remove the pressure cap.

Illustration 1 g00919160 - The radiator drain is located behind a plate in guard assembly (2).
- Remove bolt (1) in order to remove the cover plate for the radiator drain. Open the drain valve.
- Flush the cooling system with clean water until the draining water is transparent.
- Close the drain valve. Install the cover plate and the bolt.
- Add the Extended Life Coolant. Refer to the following topics:
- Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Cooling System Specifications"
- Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)"
- Start the engine. Operate the engine without the cooling system pressure cap until the water temperature regulator opens and the coolant level stabilizes.
- Maintain the coolant level at the bottom of the filler pipe so that the sight gauge is completely covered.
- Inspect the gasket of the cooling system pressure cap. If the gasket is damaged, replace the gasket.
- Install the cooling system pressure cap.
- Stop the engine.

The radiator for the scraper is located at the rear of the scraper.
If the coolant is dirty or if you observe any foaming in the cooling system, drain the coolant before the recommended interval.
- Allow the engine to cool.
- Loosen the pressure cap slowly in order to release pressure. Remove the pressure cap.
- Radiator drain valve (3) for the scraper is located under the radiator.
- Open drain valve (3).
- Flush the cooling system with clean water until the draining water is transparent.
- Close the drain valve.
