(4) As needed, use shims in order to get the following end play in the bearing. ... 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.003 ± 0.002 inch)

(9) Put a light coating of lubricant on the sealing lip. The lubricant that is used in the gear case may be used for this purpose.

(10) Put a light coating of oil on the outside lip of cage (10) before you install carrier (8). The lubricant that is used in the gear case may be used for this purpose.

(10) Apply 5P-3413 Sealant to the bore of cage (10) before you install seal (9).

(11) Torque for bolts ... 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft)

(12) As needed, use shims in order to get the following end play in the bearing. ... 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.003 ± 0.002 inch)

(15) Apply 5P-3931 Thread Compound to the face and on the threads of the nut. Tighten the nut to the following torque. ... 612 ± 68 N·m (451 ± 50 lb ft)

Adjustment of Bearing End Play for the Lower Transfer Gear

  1. Before you assemble the other components, make sure that the bearing cups and cones are properly installed. The bearing cups and cones must be seated against the shoulder of the housing and the shoulder of the shaft. Use a piece of 0.038 mm (0.0015 inch) thick shim stock or a standard feeler gauge in order to verify that the bearing cups and cones are properly seated.

  1. Place the axis of the gear or shaft in a vertical position. Install bearing cage (10) without installing shims (12) and without installing the O-ring seal (if equipped). Make sure that the cage does not bind in the housing.

  1. Install two bolts (11) and two washers with approximately 180 degrees between the bolts.

  1. Use the following steps to tighten bolts (11) :

    1. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 2.25 N·m (20 lb in).

    1. Rotate the gear or the shaft at least three revolutions.

    1. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 4.5 N·m (40 lb in).

    1. Rotate the gear or the shaft at least three revolutions.

    1. Tighten the bolts again to a torque of 4.5 N·m (40 lb in).

    1. Use a tapered feeler gauge or another suitable device for measuring. Measure the first gap between the bearing cage and the housing (not shown). Measure the gap outward from one of the bolts. Measure the second gap at the other bolt in the same manner.

  1. Average the two measurements from Step 4.f. Add 0.18 mm (0.007 inch) to this average. The result of this addition is the thickness of shims that are required.

  1. Assemble the shim pack to the correct thickness. Use a micrometer to verify that the shim pack is the correct thickness.

  1. Remove bearing cage (10). Reassemble the components with the correct shim pack and O-ring seal (if equipped). Tighten all bolts to the specified torque.

  1. The desired setting for end play of the bearing is 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.003 ± 0.002 inch).

Adjustment of Bearing End Play for the Upper Transfer Gear and the Bevel Pinion Gear

  1. Remove bolt (7) and retainer (6) .

  1. Put shims (4) (total thickness of 4.37 mm (0.172 inch)) and cover (5) into position. Install the bolts that hold the components in place.

  1. Install Tooling (A). Install Tool (B) with the point of the dial indicator against the front face of bearing cone (3) .

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to push the gear and the pinion downward. Use a ratchet wrench in order to rotate the gear and the pinion for a minimum of three revolutions. Watch the dial indicator as the needle moves. Stop rotating the gear and the pinion when you observe the maximum amount of needle movement.

  1. Zero the dial indicator. Put a mark on the bearing cone that indicates the point of maximum amount of needle movement.

  1. Pull the gear and the pinion upward with Tooling (A). Rotate the gear and the pinion for a minimum of three revolutions. Stop the gear and the pinion at the same point of maximum amount of needle movement. Record the measurement on the dial indicator. This reading is the actual bearing clearance.

  1. Repeat Steps 4 through 6. The two readings should be equivalent.

  1. Remove cover (5). Remove enough shims in order to obtain a bearing clearance (end play) of 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.003 ± 0.002 inch). Reinstall cover (5) .

  1. Install retainer (6) and bolt (7) .

Adjustment of Bevel Gear Backlash

NOTICE

After adjusting or checking backlash, remove the plate that was holding the pinion gear in place.

(13) Fabricate one plate from 6.0 mm (0.25 inch) thick mild steel. Fabricate the plate to the following dimensions:

(A) 114.0 mm (4.50 inch)

(B) 85.0 mm (3.35 inch)

(C) 32.0 mm (1.25 inch)

(D) 14.5 mm (0.57 inch)

(E) 11.0 mm (0.44 inch)

  1. Remove bolt (7) and remove one of the bolts from cover (5). Use the bolts in order to install plate (13). Plate (13) is used to keep the pinion gear from turning while you set the backlash.

  1. As required, use shim packs (14) to obtain 0.20 ± 0.10 mm (0.008 ± 0.004 inch) backlash. Check backlash after you set the end play for the bearings for the lower and the upper transfer gears.

Note: The range of backlash is measured on three approximately equal spaced teeth. The range should not be more than 0.08 mm (0.003 inch).

  1. Remove plate (13) and reinstall the bolts after you adjust the backlash.
