Required Tools
Part Number     Description     Quantity
1U-6690     Socket Wrench Assembly     1

  1. Install bearing cups (8) and (10) in housing (9) . The bearing cups must be seated against the shoulders in housing (9) .

  1. Install bearing cone (7) on pinion (6) . Bearing cone (7) must be seated against the shoulder on pinion (6) . Lubricate bearing cone (7) .

  1. Install pinion (6) in housing (9) . Press bearing cone (11) onto the shaft. Allow a small amount of end play to remain. Lubricate bearing cone (11) . Lubricate washer (12) and nut (13) and install washer (12) and nut (13) .

Note: If you freeze the bearing cups, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a press to reset the bearing cups. The limit for freezing the bearing cups is -29°C (-20°F). Remove any frost and wipe the bearing cups dry. Lubricate the bearing cups with SAE 30W gear oil in order to prevent rust on the bearing cups.

Note: If you heat the bearing cones, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a press to reset the bearing cones. The limit for heating the bearing cones is a maximum of 135°C (275°F) for a maximum of 4 hours. Lubricate the bearing cones with SAE 30W gear oil after the bearing cones have cooled in order to prevent rust on the bearing cones.

  1. Position the assembly vertically in a soft jawed vise. Tighten the vise against the teeth on pinion (6) . Tighten an appropriate bolt and an appropriate nut through an outer bolt hole in pinion housing (9) .

  1. Place a 203 mm (8.0 inch) torque wrench on this bolt so that the torque wrench is in line with the center of pinion (6) .

  1. While you rotate housing (9) with the torque wrench, tighten nut (13) until the torque wrench reading corresponds with the value in Table 2. Use a 1U-6690 Socket Wrench Assembly to tighten nut (13) .

    Table 2
    Pinion Rolling Torque
Actual Torque at the Pinion     Torque Wrench Reading (1)
    New Bearings
    0.9 to 1.8 N·m (8 to 16 lb in)

    0.57 to 1.13 N·m (5 to 10 lb in)
    Used Bearings
    0.45 to 0.9 N·m (4 to 8 lb in)

    0.29 to 0.57 N·m (2.5 to 5 lb in)
( 1 ) These readings are applicable when you are using a 203 mm (8.0 inch) torque wrench to rotate housing (9) at the bolt circle.

Make sure that there is zero end play of pinion shaft (6) .

  1. If the pinion rolling torque exceeds the specification, back off nut (13) by 1/8 turn and reseat bearing cone (11) and washer (12) against nut (13) . Perform Step 5 and Step 6 again.

Note: If a torque wrench of any other length is used, use the following formula to calculate the torque wrench reading:

    C = (B x T)/(B + A)

"C" is the torque wrench reading in N·m.

"B" is the length of the torque wrench in meters.

"A" is the bolt circle radius of pinion housing (9) in meters. This amount is equal to 0.12 m (4.724 inch).

"T" is the rolling torque specification for the pinion bearing preload. This value is 0.9 to 1.8 N·m (8 to 16 lb in).

  1. When the torque that is needed to turn the pinion is correct, stake nut (13) . To stake nut (13) , peen the collar that is on the nut into the key slot in pinion shaft (6) . See Illustration 2 for the correct tooling and for the correct dimensions.

Note: The nut may be reused if the collar is not cracked during removal or during restaking.
