Electronic Control Module (Power Train) - Replace
Before the power train electronic control module (ECM) is replaced, ensure that replacement is absolutely necessary. The power train ECM is seldom the cause of a fault. Always check that power is available to the power train ECM. Battery voltage is required from contacts 1 and 6 to contacts 2 and 5 of the machine harness connector J1 for the power train ECM.
- Turn the battery disconnect switch and the key start switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the machine harness connectors from the power train ECM.
Note: Use the screws in the center of the harness connector in order to remove the machine harness connectors from the power train ECM.
- Remove the power train ECM.
- Make sure that the new power train ECM that is being installed has the correct part number.
- Connect the machine harness to the power train ECM.
- Install the new power train ECM.
- Turn the battery disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
- Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to program the new power train ECM, if necessary.
- If the correct software is not installed in the new power train ECM, use the ET in order to flash the correct software.
- Calibrate the modulating valve (torque converter lockup clutch).
Reference: For additional information about the power train electronic control module (ECM), refer to Systems Operation, "Transmission Electrical System" for the machine that is being serviced.
Reference: For additional information on calibrating the modulating valve (torque converter lockup clutch), refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Calibration" for the machine that is being serviced.
