525B Wheel Skidder and 535B Wheel Skidder Power Train Caterpillar

Calibration

Usage:

525B 3KZ

General Information

The power train electronic control module (ECM) uses the main display module on the Caterpillar Monitoring System for showing diagnostic information to service personnel. Diagnostic information concerning the power train ECM is sent via the Cat Data Link to the Caterpillar Monitoring System. Service personnel must be familiar with the Caterpillar Monitoring System in order to troubleshoot the power train ECM.

The Caterpillar Monitoring System has different modes for troubleshooting and calibration. The service personnel need to be able to place the Caterpillar Monitoring System in the correct mode of operation.

Reference: For additional information about the Caterpillar Monitoring System, refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, SENR1394, "Caterpillar Monitoring System" for the machine that is being serviced.

Reference: For additional information about the Caterpillar Monitoring System, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Using the Caterpillar Monitoring System to Determine Diagnostic Codes" for the machine that is being serviced.

The calibration mode for the lockup clutch is -5-. Use the following steps to access the calibration mode for the torque converter lockup clutch.

  1. Connect the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool to the four-pin connector.

Note: The service mode connector is located at the bottom of the dash near the brake pedal. In order to use the service mode connector, reach underneath the dash and pull out the service mode connector.

  1. Turn the key start switch and the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.

  1. Depress the "MODE" switch on the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool. The Caterpillar Monitoring System will scroll to different display modes in the display area while the "MODE" switch is depressed. The display mode -5- is the calibration mode for the torque converter lockup clutch that is used by the power train ECM. The "MODE" switch should be held until -5- is shown in the display area on the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

Calibrating the Torque Converter Lockup Clutch

The torque converter lockup clutch will need to be calibrated, when the CID 0709 FMI 13 diagnostic code is displayed on the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

The CID 0709 FMI 13 diagnostic code is recorded, when one of these conditions occur.

  • The power train electronic control module (ECM) determines that the solenoid modulating valve (torque converter lockup clutch) needs to be calibrated.

  • The power train electronic control module (ECM) has been replaced.

  • New software is flashed to the power train electronic control module (ECM).

The following procedure is used to calibrate the pressure for the modulating valve (torque converter lockup clutch).

Procedure

------ WARNING! ------

Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the power train.

----------------------

Before you start the test procedure, complete the following procedure:

  • Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting

Reference: For additional information on preparing the machine for troubleshooting, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting" for the machine that is being serviced.

  1. Move the transmission direction control switch to the NEUTRAL position.

  1. Engage the parking brake.

  1. Connect 4C-8195 Control Service Tool to the service mode connector (four pin). The service mode connector is located at the bottom of the dash near the brake pedal.

Location of Modulating Valve (Torque Converter Lockup Clutch)

    (1) Modulating valve (torque converter lockup clutch). (2) Pressure tap.

The right rear side cover for the engine compartment has been removed for clarity.

  1. Open the top panel and remove the bottom panel in order to gain access to modulating valve (1) .

  1. Connect a 4135 kPa (600 psi) pressure gauge to pressure tap (2) on modulating valve (1).

Note: The modulating valve (torque converter lockup clutch) is mounted on the right side of the torque converter housing at the rear of the engine compartment.

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Press and hold the "MODE" switch on the control service tool down until the display area on the Caterpillar Monitoring System displays -5-. (mode 5 is the torque converter lockup clutch calibration mode)

  1. In the calibration mode, the Caterpillar Monitoring System will display the recommended pressure kPa for the torque converter lockup clutch or an error code. If the pressure is displayed, go to Step 9. If an error code is displayed on the Caterpillar Monitoring System, you should correct the error. Then go to Step 9. The error codes are listed in the Table 1 below.

    Table 1
    Error Codes
    Error No.     Description
E01     The transmission direction control switch is not in the NEUTRAL position.
E02     The transmission output speed is not zero (0 RPM).
E03     The parking brake is not engaged.
E04     The lockup clutch solenoid has an active fault.

  1. Place the transmission direction control switch in the FORWARD position. The Caterpillar Monitoring System will display a number. There is a limited range for adjusting the value of this number. This number is related to the amount of current that is supplied to the lockup clutch solenoid. The current is proportional to the pressure that is displayed on the gauge that is connected to the pressure tap on modulating valve (1) .

  1. Use the "CLEAR" switch on the control service tool to regulate the current. Press the switch upward in order to increase the current (+) to the solenoid. The number in the display area will increase. Press the switch downward in order to decrease the current (-) to the solenoid. The number in the display area will decrease. Increasing the current will increase the pressure. Decreasing the current will decrease the pressure.

  1. Adjust the pressure, until the pressure on the gauge matches the recommended pressure from Step 8.

  1. The calibration is now complete. Move the transmission direction control switch to the NEUTRAL position.

  1. Press and hold "MODE" switch down until the display area on the Caterpillar Monitoring System displays the hour meter.

  1. Stop the engine.

  1. Disconnect the control service tool and the pressure gauge.

  1. Install the engine panels.
