Steering Clutch - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the hydraulic controls for the brake and the actuating mechanisms. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Brake Hydraulic Control and Actuating Mechanism - Remove".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the oil from the steering clutch case.

  1. Remove plug (1) .

    Note: Remove all bolts (2) and (3) except for one on each side of the steering clutch. Turn the sprocket or turn the track in order to remove the bolts.

  1. Remove bolts (2) that hold the steering clutch to the steering clutch hub.

  1. Remove bolts (3) through the opening that is in the steering clutch case. Plug (1) was removed at this location.

  1. Install two 3/8 inch - 16 NC bolts that are 4 inches long in the brake bands, as shown.

  1. Attach an appropriate lifting device and a hoist to the brake bands and remove the last two bolts that hold the steering clutch in position.

  1. Remove steering clutch (4) from the machine. The weight of the steering clutch is 113 kg (250 lb).

Installation Procedure

  1. Attach an appropriate lifting device and a hoist to steering clutch (4) .

  1. Put the steering clutch (4) in position between the steering clutch hub and the flange.

  1. Install two bolts in order to hold the clutch in position. Remove the hoist.

  1. Put 5P-3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of all the bolts.

  1. Install bolts (2) and (3) that hold the steering clutch in position. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 270 ± 25 N·m (200 ± 20 lb ft).

  1. Install plug (1) in the steering clutch case.

End By:

  1. Install the hydraulic controls for the brake and the actuating mechanisms. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Brake Hydraulic Control and Actuating Mechanism - Install".
  2. Fill the bevel gear case and steering clutch case with oil to the correct level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual.
