Radiator Guard Cross Rod Failure Caterpillar

Radiator Guard Cross Rod Failure

Usage:

WHEEL LOADERS992G (7HR1-UP) WHEEL LOADERS

Problem:

Cross rods (2) are designed to prevent radiator guard (1) from swaying left to right during machine operation. The rods help to prevent radiator guard fatigue cracking. Depending on the application, it can take thousands of hours before cracking begins.

The rods rub and break where they cross each other. The failure is due to metal to metal contact and vibration. When this occurs, the fan blades catch the broken rods and force them through several radiator cores, which causes severe damage and downtime. Failure usually occurs after 2000 hours, but can be earlier.

Solution:

Remove cross rods (2) that are found to be worn. Do not replace the cross rods. Further information will be issued soon to rework all field machines after a new design has been tested. C
