SERVICE MAGAZINE, OCTOBER 25, 1982, PAGES 10, 11 AND 12. In the article "Reconditioning Of Oil Pump Covers," Illustrations 4 and 5 are in the wrong position. Make a note to reverse the position of these two illustrations, so they are with the correct captions.

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

Reports show that new oil pump covers are, at times, installed on 3208 Engines before the existing covers have been checked to see if they can be used again or reconditioned. Because of the cost of the oil pump cover, it can be to your advantage to use or recondition the existing cover whenever possible. The steps which follow can be used to check if the existing oil pump cover can be used again or reconditioned.

1. Check to see if the gear side of the pump cover is flat. It must be flat within .08 mm (.003"). If it is not within specification the face of the cover must be machined before the cover is used again. The minimum thickness is shown in Illustration 1. The surface finish of the cover must be 1.6 micrometers (63 microinches) or better after it is machined.

Illustration 1. Oil pump cover specifications.

2. Check for grooves on the face. Grooves which connect the oil passages are not acceptable because they will permit oil to leak between the passages. See Illustration 2. The face of this cover must be machined.

If small grooves are present and they do not connect the oil passages, the cover be used again. See Illustration 3.

NOTE: Later oil pump covers have an O-ring groove in the face. If more than .13 mm (.005") of material is removed from the face of one of these covers, the O-ring groove will also have to be machined. See Illustration 1.

Illustration 2. Grooves that connect the oil passages; cover must be machined.

Illustration 3. Normal wear; use again.

3. Check the pressure valve seat area. Cracks or gouges (deep scratches) are not permitted in this area. See Illustration 4.

Illustration 4. Cracks or gouges; do not use again.

Even wear in the seat area is acceptable and the cover can be used again. See Illustration 5. Some oil leakage in the seat area is permitted.

Illustration 5. Normal wear; use again.

This article is only to be used as a general guide to find if oil pump covers can be used again. Remember, each part may not be exactly like those shown.
