Water Temperature Regulator - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.



NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


  1. Drain the coolant from the engine into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change".

  2. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the regulator cover assembly.

  3. Remove bolts (1). Remove bypass elbow (7). Remove the O-ring seal from the bypass elbow. Remove gasket (2) from regulator cover (8).

  4. Disconnect the harness assembly from coolant temperature sensor (4).

  5. Remove bolts (9). Remove regulator cover (8).

  6. Remove bolts (5). Remove water connector (6) from the cylinder head. Remove gasket (3) from the cylinder head.

  7. Remove regulator cover gasket (11) from regulator cover (8).

  8. Remove ferrule (10) from regulator cover (8).

  9. Remove water temperature regulator (13) from regulator cover (8).

  10. Remove lip seal (12) from the regulator cover.

  11. If necessary, remove coolant temperature sensor (4) from the regulator cover. Remove the O-ring seal from the coolant temperature sensor.

  1. Use Tooling (A) to install lip seal (12) in regulator cover (8). Ensure that the lip seal is fully seated in the counterbore of the regulator cover.

  2. Install ferrule (10) in regulator cover (8).

  3. Install water temperature regulator (13) in the regulator cover.

  4. Position gasket (11) on the regulator cover.

  5. Position gasket (3) and water connector (6) on the cylinder head. Install bolts (5).

  6. Position regulator cover (8) and the gasket on water connector (6). Install bolts (9).

  7. Install the O-ring seal on bypass elbow (7). Apply Tooling (B) to the O-ring seal on the bypass elbow.

  8. Position bypass elbow (7) and gasket (2) on the regulator cover. Install bolts (1).

  9. Install a new O-ring seal on the coolant temperature sensor. Install coolant temperature sensor (4) and tighten to a torque of 20 ± 3 N·m (15 ± 2 lb ft).

  10. Connect the harness assembly to the coolant temperature sensor.

  11. Connect the upper radiator hose to the water manifold.

  12. Fill the cooling system to the correct coolant level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" in the Maintenance Section for more information.
