a. tilt cab (24° position) *
*This operation is in the Vehicle Systems Disassembly And Assembly section.
1. Remove bolts (1), loosen hose clamp (3), and remove air inlet pipe (2) (953 only).
2. Loosen the hose clamp that holds hose (4) to the breather on the valve cover.
3. Remove clamp (5) that holds the fuel injection lines to the valve cover.
4. Loosen the nuts at both ends of all the fuel injection lines; disconnect and remove the fuel injection lines as a unit.
5. Install caps (A) on the fuel injection pumps and adapters in the head.
6. Install plugs (B) in the nuts on the fuel injection lines.
7. Remove bolts (6) that hold the valve cover to the cylinder head, and remove the valve cover.
Install Valve Cover (Earlier)
NOTE: If studs (1) were removed, tighten them to a torque of 15 ± 4 N·m (11 ± 3 lb.ft.).
1. Install a new gasket for the valve cover if needed. Install the hose on the breather, and put the valve cover in position on the cylinder head. Tighten the hose clamp on the breather.
2. Install the bolts that hold the valve cover in place. Tighten the bolts in number sequence to a torque of 14 ± 3 N·m (10 ± 2 lb.ft.).
3. Remove caps (A) from the fuel injection pumps and adapters in the cylinder head.
4. Remove plugs (B) from the nuts on the fuel injection lines.
5. Install fuel injection lines (2) as a unit. The fuel lines must not make contact with other fuel lines or engine components except at fittings and clamps. Use tool (C) and a torque wrench to tighten the nuts on the fuel injection lines to a torque of 40 ± 7 N·m (30 ± 5 lb.ft.).
NOTE: When a crowfoot wrench is used with a torque wrench, a correction is necessary for the dial reading. To find the amount of correction necessary, use the Caterpillar Torque Computer, Form No. GEG02229 which is also Snap-On Form No. SS-306B.
6. Put the clamp in position on the fuel injection lines at the valve cover, and install the nuts and washers that hold it in place. Tighten the nuts to a torque of 0.8 ± 0.2 N·m (7 ± 2 lb.in.).
7. Put air inlet pipe (3) in position, and install the bolts, and tighten the hose clamp that hold it in place (953 only).
