Pressure Lubrication Procedure for Remanufactured Engines and Short Blocks{1000, 1200, 1020}

Usage:

All Remanufactured Engines and Short Blocks

Introduction

It is both important and necessary for a short block or Remanufactured engine to have adequate (needed) lubrication during the first few seconds of its initial (first) start-up. A start-up without this needed lubrication can cause bearing damage.

It is our recommendation to ALWAYS DO THE PRESSURE LUBRICATION PROCEDURE as given in this publication, BEFORE the initial start-up of a reconditioned or rebuilt engine

Pressure Lubrication Procedure

Some type of oil reservoir with a pressure gauge is needed to do the pressure lubrication procedure. In the procedure that follows, a tank assembly from a 1P0540 Flow Checking Tool Group is used for the oil reservoir. If one of these tanks is used in the pressure lubrication procedure, the inside of the tank must be thoroughly cleaned.

NOTICE

NEVER use the same tank assembly for both, the pressure lubrication procedure and the fuel flow checking procedure. It is not possible to get the tank assembly clean enough to do both operations. ANY AMOUNT OF DIRT, DEBRIS, ETC. CAN CAUSE FUEL NOZZLE FAILURE, if the tank is used for fuel flow checking after it has been used for the pressure lubrication procedure.

Other sources of clean oil under pressure, such as a service shop central oil supply, can also be used for pressure lubrication.

1. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Guide for the engine that is to have the pressure lubrication. Find the amount of oil needed to fill the engine crankcase to the correct oil level. Put 30 percent of this amount of oil in the tank assembly for use in the pressure lubrication procedure.

NOTE: For some engines, 30 percent of the crankcase fill capacity will make it necessary to fill the tank assembly, shown here, more than one time.

2. Use the necessary fittings and hose to connect the tank assembly to a port that connects to the main oil gallery of the cylinder block. Illustrations (A), (B) and (C) are examples of connecting points for some engine models.

For engine model (A), remove a plug at the rear of the right side cylinder head and make the connection as shown.

For engine models (B) and (C), remove plug (1) or (2) on the right side of the cylinder block and connect the pressure lubrication equipment.

------ WARNING! ------

Pressure air can cause personal injury. Air pressure MUST NOT be more than 345 kPa (50 psi) at any time.

-------WARNING!-------

3. Adjust the air pressure regulator to 240 ± 35 kPa (35 ± 5 psi). Connect shop air pressure to the tank assembly to move the oil from the reservoir into the main oil gallery and engine lubrication oil passages within the cylinder block.

NOTE: If shop air pressure is not available, the tank assembly shown has a hand pump that can be used to get the minimum pressure needed.

4. After the pressure lubrication procedure is complete, shut off the air pressure. Disconnect the pressure lubrication equipment. Be sure to install the plug in the hole that was used for pressure lubrication.

5. Add the remainder of oil that is needed to fill the engine crankcase to its correct oil level. REMEMBER that 30 percent of the oil needed to fill the crankcase to its correct level has already been installed during the pressure lubrication procedure.

NOTE: Before the initial engine start-up, turn the crankshaft a few revolutions, with the governor control in the FUEL OFF position, to get some movement of the lubrication oil within the engine.
