Field Reinforcement and Weld Repair for General Purpose Buckets{6101} Caterpillar

Field Reinforcement and Weld Repair for General Purpose Buckets{6101}

Usage:

943 and 953 Track Type Loaders

Introduction

This instruction gives the procedure to make repairs to and install reinforcement plates on 943 and 953 Track Type Loaders equipped with general purpose bucket assemblies.

943 - 9V9030, 9V8999, 6W3557 and 6W3553 General Purpose Bucket Assemblies.

953 - 6W0183, 6W0184, 6W3555 and 6W3551 General Purpose Bucket Assemblies.

This repair procedure will give increased service life for the bucket. All reinforcement plates are available from the Parts Department as 8Y1766 (943) and 8Y1768 (953) Bucket Modification Arrangements.

Use either AWS E7018 or E70S3 solid welding electrode wire with gas shield. For conditions with rust or mill scale, use E70S5 instead of E70S3 to make the repairs and install the reinforcement plates.

Necessary Parts

Installation of Reinforcement Plates

Position the bucket on the ground as shown above.

1. Remove bucket tilt pin (1).

NOTE: Remove all paint, rust, and foreign materials from the areas to be repaired before the welds are made.

2. Inspect the bucket for cracks or cracked welds. If any are present, use an air carbon arc torch or similar tool to make V-grooves along each crack or damaged weld. Grind each groove to remove all weld material and slag. Fill the cracks with weld and make repairs to all damaged welds.

3. Use an air carbon arc torch or similar tool to remove two portions of lower channel (2).

NOTE: Do not remove center channel (3), between center tilt hinge plates.

4. Prior to welding reinforcement plates in place, grind plate edges as necessary to ensure the plates will lie flat against the part of the bucket to which they will be welded.

5. Complete the 6 mm (.24") wide 1.5 mm (.06") penetration welds, four places, now visible once the lower channels have been removed.

6. Position plates (4) and (5) between the tilt hinge plates and the lift hinge castings.

7. Make the following welds:

NOTE: Provide a 3 mm (.12") gap between the new and existing plates (at location D) to insure adequate weld penetration.

* A - 6 mm (.24") fillet weld with a 1.5 mm (.06") penetration.* B - 8 mm (.31") V groove weld - Grind smooth for future plate installation.* C - 8 mm (.31") V groove weld.* D - 2 mm (.08") square groove weld with a 6 mm (.24") bevel groove weld. Grind weld flush for future plate installation.

8. Position plates (6) and (7) between the tilt hinge plates and the lift hinge castings on top of plates (4) and (5).

9. Make the following welds:

NOTE: Provide a 3 mm (.12") gap between the new and existing plates (at location F) to insure adequate weld penetration.

* E - 6 mm (.24") fillet weld with a 1.5 mm (.06") penetration in the three areas shown.* F - 2 mm (.08") square groove weld with a 6 mm (.24") bevel groove weld.

10. Position plates (8) and (9) on the insides of the tilt hinge plates.

11. Make the following welds:

* G - 10 mm (.40") bevel groove weld with an 8 mm (.31") X 14 mm (.55") fillet weld.* H - 2 mm (.08") square groove weld with a 3 mm (.12") bevel groove weld.* I - 8 mm (.31") fillet weld with a 1.5 mm (.06") penetration.* J - 10 mm (.40") fillet weld with a 1.5 mm (.06") penetration.* K - 6 mm (.24") fillet weld with a 1.5 mm (.06") penetration.

NOTE: Make an 8 mm (.31") fillet weld with a 1.5 mm (.06") penetration between locations (X) and (Y).

12. Position two plates (10) and ... ... two plates (11) as shown between the lift hinge casting flanges.

13. Make the following welds:

* L - 6 mm (.24") bevel groove weld.* M - 6 mm (.24") bevel groove weld followed by a 6 mm (.24") X 10 mm (.40") fillet weld.* N - 6 mm (.24") fillet weld with a 1.5 mm (.06") penetration.* O - 10 mm (.40") V groove weld.

14. Position plates (12) and (13) as shown on the lift hinge casting flanges.

15. Make the following welds for plates (12) and (13):

* P - 6 mm (.24") bevel groove weld followed by a 6 mm (.24") X 10 mm (.40") fillet weld.* Q - 6 mm (.24") fillet weld with a 1.5 mm (.06") penetration.* R - 10 mm (.40") V groove weld.* S - 10 mm (.40") J groove weld.

NOTE: Thoroughly clean the bucket to remove all foreign materials.

16. Paint all welds and all new parts.

17. Replace bucket tilt pin.
