NOTICE |
---|
Use an 8T5071 Seal Guard to protect the sealing surface of the seal anytime a front track roller frame is removed from a rear track roller frame equipped with a new seal. This will prevent damage to the sealing surface by the track adjuster and the recoil mechanism. |
1. Remove the front track roller frame as shown in the Service Manual.
2. Remove existing seal (1). If oil seal (2) has been leaking or is damaged, install a new seal as shown.
3. Clean the chrome sleeve and seal bore of all foreign material, oil, dirt, etc.
4. Check to make sure that all burrs are removed from the chrome sleeve, chamfer and seal bore.
NOTE: The oil remaining inside the rear track roller frame must not get on the seal bore after it has been cleaned.
5. Wipe the outer case ring of the seal with 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer.
6. Put 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer on the seal bore, and let it dry for 5 minutes at 21°C (70°F).
7. Apply 7M7456 Bearing Mount Compound to the bore.
8. Position the oil side of seal (3) toward the inside of the rear track roller frame as shown. Start the seal into the bore using a soft hammer.
NOTE: See FORM SEHS8908 Use of 1U5753 Seal Starter Tool to Install Recoil Bearing Seals.
When the seal is fully installed, there will be a 5 mm (.20") gap between the seal and the track roller frame, as shown above.
NOTICE |
---|
Do not use a punch, screwdriver, or similar tool to drive the seal into the bore. Do not push on the inner plastic ring, or damage will occur to the seal. |
9. Cut 8T5071 Seal Guard (4) to the correct length:
- * 1050 mm ± 5 mm (41.31" ± .20") for the D8L, the D9N and the 578.* 1150 mm ± 5 mm (45.28" ± .20") for the D9L and the 589.
10. Install seal guard (4) on the seal inside diameter as shown.
11. Make sure seal guard (4) is tight inside the seal when the ends are butted together.
12. Install the front track roller frame into the rear track roller frame until the chrome sleeve is 25 to 50 mm (1.0" to 2.0") from the seal.
13. Lubricate the chrome sleeve with oil.
14. Remove seal guard (4) by freeing one end with a screwdriver or needle nose pliers, then pulling the guard out.
15. Align the front track roller frame with the seal.
NOTE: The seal must start on the chrome sleeve chamfer evenly, and all the way around.
16. Pull the front track roller frame through the seal as shown with a ratchet puller or similar tool.
17. Install the track and make adjustments as necessary. See the Service Manual for the correct procedure.
