Dry Installation Procedure

  1. Use a wire brush in order to thoroughly clean all of the dirt and all of the foreign material from the seal grooves in the swing gear and bearing.

  1. Wash the seal grooves with a suitable solvent that will not leave an oily residue.

  1. Make sure that the seal grooves in the swing gear and bearing are thoroughly clean and dry prior to the installation of the dust seals.

  1. Cut one end of inner dust seal (3) at an angle of 90 degrees. Use a blunt tool to install the inner dust seal in the seal groove of the swing gear and bearing. Position the lip of the seal toward the bearing, as shown.

  1. Measure the inner dust seal and cut the remaining end of the inner dust seal at an angle of 90 degrees. Install the remaining end of the inner dust seal in the seal groove.

  1. Make sure that the inner dust seal is correctly seated in the seal groove. Make sure that there is not a gap between the ends of the inner dust seal.

Note: Loctite 380 cures very quickly.

  1. Pull both ends of the inner dust seal out of the seal groove approximately 50.8 mm (2.00 inch). Apply Loctite 380 to the cut ends of the inner dust seal. Bond both ends together. Immediately install the inner dust seal into the seal groove of the swing gear and bearing.

  1. Make sure that the inner dust seal is correctly seated in the seal groove. Make sure that there is not a gap between the ends of the inner dust seal.

  1. Run a dull putty knife between the lip of the seal and the bearing at the seal joint in order to ensure that the lip of the inner dust seal does not adhere to the top of the bearing at the seal joint.

  1. Repeat Step 1 through Step 9 in order to install outer dust seal (4). Refer to Illustration 1 for the correct seal orientation in the swing gear and bearing.

  1. Lubricate the swing gear and bearing with grease.

  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the swing gear and bearing and the undercarriage frame.

  1. Apply 1U-8846 Sealant on the mating surface of the undercarriage frame. Apply 4C-5599 Anti-Seize Compound to the dowel in the swing gear and bearing.

  1. Apply 4C-5599 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads of bolts (2). Install the spacers and bolts (2) that hold the swing gear and bearing to the undercarriage frame. Use Tooling (B) to tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 900 ± 100 N·m (660 ± 75 lb ft).

  1. Add 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease to the swing gear and bearing. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for further information.

Bonded Installation Procedure

Note: Inner dust seal (3) and outer dust seal (4) must be installed in the swing gear and bearing in small increments. Loctite 380 cures very quickly.

  1. Cut one end of inner dust seal (3) at an angle of 90 degrees.

Note: Loctite 380 cures very quickly.

  1. Apply Loctite 380 to the first 152.4 mm (6.00 inch) of the inner dust seal. Start approximately 50.8 mm (2.00 inch) in from the end of the seal.

  1. Use a blunt tool to immediately install only the bonded portion of the inner dust seal in the seal groove of the swing gear and bearing. Make sure that the seal is seated correctly in the seal groove. Make sure that the lip of the seal is positioned toward the bearing, as shown.

  1. Run a dull putty knife between the lip of the seal and the bearing at the seal joint in order to ensure that the lip of the inner dust seal does not adhere to the top of the bearing at the seal joint.

Note: Loctite 380 cures very quickly.

  1. Apply Loctite 380 to the next 152.4 mm (6.00 inch) of the inner dust seal.

  1. Repeat Step 8 through Step 10 until the last 152.4 mm (6.00 inch) of the inner dust seal is not installed in the seal groove.

  1. Measure the inner dust seal and cut the remaining end of the inner dust seal at an angle of 90 degrees. Do not apply Loctite 380 to the remaining end of the inner dust seal. Install the remaining end of the inner dust seal in the seal groove.

  1. Make sure that the inner dust seal is correctly seated in the seal groove. Make sure that there is not a gap between the ends of the inner dust seal.
