Removal of Type "A" Travel Motor

Start By:

1. Remove the travel brake valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Travel Brake Valve - Remove" in this section.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Drain the oil from the final drive into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the final drive is 10 L (2.6 US gal).

Note: A small amount of oil will drain from hose assemblies (1) and (2) when the hose assemblies are disconnected from the travel motor. Place a suitable container under the travel motor in order to contain the oil.

2. Disconnect hose assemblies (1) and (2) from the travel motor. Put plugs in the ends of the hose assemblies in order to prevent oil loss and keep contaminants out of the hydraulic system.

3. Six socket head bolts (3) hold the travel motor to the final drive.

4. Remove two of the six socket head bolts (3) that secure the travel motor to the final drive.

5. Install Tooling (B) in the place of the two bolts that were removed. Fasten Tool (A) and a hoist to travel motor (4), as shown. Remove remaining bolt (3) that secures travel motor (4) to the final drive. Carefully pull travel motor (4) out of the final drive. Remove the travel motor from the machine. The weight of the travel motor is 66 kg (145 lb).

6. Remove the O-ring seal from the body of the travel motor.

Removal of Type "B" Travel Motor

Start By:

1. Remove the travel brake valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Travel Brake Valve - Remove" in this section.
