  1. Install the up ring and the seal in cylinder (12) .

  1. Use Tooling (D) to install the lip type seal in the end of cylinder (12) . Install the lip type seal with the sealing lip toward the outside of the cylinder. Install the lip type seal until the seal is 0.5 ± 0.5 mm (.02 ± .02 inch) below the outside surface of the cylinder.

  1. Check the condition of the threads on the retaining rod for the recoil spring and nut (8) . If the threads are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

  1. Carefully install the retaining rod for the recoil spring in cylinder (12) .

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from recoil spring force.

Recoil spring force, if not relieved, can result in personal injury or death.

Relieve spring force before removing threaded retainer, performing repairs on recoil spring housing, or removing recoil spring.

See Service Manual for disassembly instructions. Maximum pressure is 20 700 kPa (3,000 psi).

    ----------------------

  1. Install the hydraulic track adjuster in cylinder (12) .

  1. Check the inside of support (9) . Make sure that the support is clean and free of dirt and debris.

  1. Assemble the recoil spring assembly loosely. Install the retaining rod for the recoil spring and cylinder (12) in plate (11) , spring (10) and support (9) .

Note: Two adjustable supports (1) , reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3) are part of Tooling (A) .

  1. Adjust the spacing between reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3) so that the spacing is approximately the same length as the recoil spring assembly. Make sure that two adjustable supports (1) are positioned between the reaction plate and the movable plate, as shown. Level the two supports.

Note: Do not remove the hoist from the recoil spring assembly until the unit is leveled, centered, and locked in Tooling (A) .

Note: The recoil spring assembly may be installed in Tooling (A) from the end. In this case, reaction plate (2) must be removed. Then reinstall the reaction plate after the recoil spring assembly is in place on two adjustable supports (1) .

  1. The combined weight of the recoil spring assembly and the hydraulic track adjuster is 95 kg (210 lb). Fasten a hoist to the recoil spring assembly. Put the recoil spring assembly in position on two adjustable supports (1) in Tooling (A) . Adjust the two adjustable supports until the centerline of the recoil spring assembly and the centerline of Tooling (A) are aligned.

  1. Operate Tooling (B) , and guide the end of the recoil spring assembly through the hole in reaction plate (2) . Make sure that the recoil spring assembly is leveled and centered in Tooling (A) . Remove the hoist from the recoil spring assembly.

  1. Close covers (6) on Tooling (A) . Compress the recoil spring assembly with Tooling (B) . Open the covers on Tooling (A) , and measure the assembled length of the recoil spring. The compressed spring length must be 388.0 ± 0.7 mm (15.28 ± .03 inch). If the assembled length is not correct, close covers (6) on Tooling (A) , and adjust the spring length with Tooling (B) . If the assembled length is correct, the assembly of the recoil spring assembly can be completed.

  1. Apply a rust inhibitor to the threads on the end of the retaining rod for the recoil spring. Install the washer and nut (8) . Tighten nut (8) with Tooling (C) .

    Illustration 6g00370538

  1. Fasten a hoist to the recoil spring assembly, and remove the recoil spring assembly from Tooling (A) . Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound on the threads of the two socket head bolts that hold strip (7) in place. Install the strip and the two socket head bolts that hold the strip.

End By: Install the front idler, the recoil spring and the hydraulic track adjuster. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Idler, Recoil Spring and Hydraulic Track Adjuster - Remove and Install" in this manual.
