Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove bolts (2) and plate assembly (1).

  2. Remove bolts (4) and plate assembly (3).

  3. Drain the fuel tank into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the fuel tank is approximately 621 L (164 US gal).

  4. Open the right rear access door.

  5. Remove cover (5).

  6. Remove handrail assembly (7) and bolts (6).

  7. Remove handrail assembly (10) and bolts (9). Remove bolts (8).

  8. Remove bolts (11) and cover (12). Use two people to remove cover assembly (12). The weight of cover assembly (12) is approximately 23.81 kg (53 lb).

  9. Remove cable straps (13) and (14). Reposition the harness assemblies.

  10. Remove clip (16) and hose assembly (15).

  11. Disconnect hoses (17) and (18). Remove clips (19).

  12. Attach Tooling (A), Tooling (B), and a suitable lifting device to fuel tank (20). The weight of fuel tank (20) is approximately 251 kg (554 lb).

  13. Remove bolts (21) and remove fuel tank (20).

Installation Procedure

  1. Attach tooling (A), tooling (B), and suitable lifting device to install fuel tank (20).

  2. Apply tooling (C) to bolt (21). Install bolt (21) to the bottom of fuel tank (20).

  3. Connect hoses (17) and (18). Tighten the clamps for hoses (17) and (18) to a torque of 1.4 ± .3 N·m (12.4 ± 2.7 lb in). Install clips (19).

  4. Install hose assembly (15) and clip (16).

  5. Install cable straps (13) and (14) to the harness assemblies.

  6. Install cover (12) and bolts (11). Install Bolts (8).

  7. Install handrail assembly (10) and bolts (9).

  8. Install handrail assembly (7) and bolts (6).

  9. Install cover (5).

  10. Apply tooling (C) to the threads of bolts (2) and (4).

  11. Install plate assembly (3) and bolt (4).

  12. Install plate assembly (1) and bolt (2).
