Before Towing

Usage:

3456 BGA

------ WARNING! ------

Improper hookup and towing is dangerous and could result in injury or death to yourself or to others. DO NOT tow this trailer package unless you are a properly licensed driver, have been properly trained, and are authorized to drive and/or tow the trailer package.

----------------------

Inspect tires for the following conditions: wear, damage and proper inflation. Stand behind the tire tread and use a self-attaching chuck while you inflate a tire. Do not tow the trailer package with overinflated tires or underinflated tires. Inflate the tires according to the tire manufacturer's instructions.

(2) Lug nuts

Do not change the size of the tires. Do not change the type of the tires. Tighten all lug nuts to the proper specification.

Refer to the OEM "Operators Manual" for more information on the trailer for operation and maintenance.

NOTICE

Observe all local traffic regulations and observe federal traffic regulations involved in towing the trailer package for lawful operation.

------ WARNING! ------

Failure to utilize an appropriate and properly sized tow vehicle that has a level horizontal hitch connection could lead to excessive towing sway. This could result in personal injury or death.

----------------------

The weight of the tow vehicle should be equal to or greater than the total weight of the package. The vehicle weight of the trailer package is marked on the sides of the unit and on the front of the unit. The trailer package weighs 9299 kg (20500 lb) with a full tank of fuel. Verify that the tow vehicle is rated for towing a gross vehicle weight of 9299 kg (20500 lb) before you attempt to tow the trailer.

NOTICE

Before towing, inspect the coupling devices and torque on the hitch bolts.

Required torque is 215 ± 40 N m (159 ± 30 lb ft).

NOTICE

Before towing, inspect the coupling devices and check the torque on the tongue retaining bolts.

Required torque is 370 ± 50 N·m (273 ± 37 lb ft).

(2) Tow vehicle hitch

The adjustable trailer hitch should be mounted at the same height as the tow vehicle hitch. This will reduce the tendency for vertical pressure to be applied on the hitch.

A breakaway cable is attached to an electric brake switch that is on the tongue of the trailer. If the trailer is accidentally unfastened during towing and the breakaway cable is broken, the running gear brakes are actuated. Attach the breakaway cable to the tow vehicle.

NOTICE

If the breakaway switch is actuated, the actuator bracket will require replacement. The breakaway switch should only be used in emergency situations.

Inspect the safety chains. Inspect the breakaway cable. Inspect the coupling device of the tow vehicle and the chain attachment points. Look for the following defects:

  • excessive wear or corrosion

  • components that are cracked, components that are deformed, or components that are degraded

  • loose nuts, bolts, or other fasteners

------ WARNING! ------

DO NOT allow any personnel between hitch or vehicle and trailer. Failure to comply could cause possible crushing injuries or death.

----------------------

Ensure that no one is in the way. The tow vehicle should then be backed up to the trailer. Position the tow vehicle in preparation for coupling.

Position the tow vehicle with sufficient clearance behind the vehicle for hooking up to the trailer package.

Do not attempt to raise or lower the tongue of the trailer by hand. Use the jack that is provided.

------ WARNING! ------

Keep hands and fingers clear of the coupling device and all other pinch points. Keep feet clear of the trailer tongue to avoid injury in case the trailer tongue should slip from the jack.

----------------------

Connect the tow vehicle to the trailer hitch. Ensure that the coupling device is fully engaged. Ensure that the coupling device is closed. Ensure that the coupling device is pinned.

Attach or connect the safety chains, the breakaway cable and the 7-Pin connector.

Ensure that the coupling device, the adjacent structures on the tow vehicle, and the connections do not interfere with the motion of any part of the trailer. This includes the trailer coupling device with respect to the tow vehicle when the package is maneuvered over any anticipated terrain. Ensure that the safety chains, the breakaway cable, and the electrical connection provides sufficient slack in order to prevent strain during the cornering and the maneuvering of the package.

The safety chains, the breakaway cable and the cable for the 7-Pin connector must be supported in order to prevent dragging or rubbing. Dragging and rubbing can cause wear that could render the safety chains and the connections inoperative.

Parking brake

Ensure that the parking brake for the trailer is disengaged. Ensure that the trailer wheels are not chocked or blocked. Ensure that all the tie-downs (if equipped) for the trailer are free.

Ensure that all the lights and signals are operational on the trailer and the tow vehicle.

Do not carry loose tools, equipment, or supplies on the trailer package. Do not carry loose tools, equipment, or supplies in the trailer package.

Do not permit personnel to ride in the trailer package. Do not permit personnel to ride on the trailer package.

Before moving in any direction, ensure that the areas behind the trailer, in front of the trailer, and under the trailer are clear of all personnel and obstructions.

Do not permit any personnel to stand or walk between the trailer and the tow vehicle.
