  1. Ensure that the face of the valves are clean. Ensure that the bottom face of the cylinder head is clean. Ensure that the cylinder head is not distorted. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Cylinder Head - Inspect" for the procedure to measure flatness of the cylinder head.

  2. Use the 8T-0455 Liner Projection Tool Group in order to check the depths of the inlet valve and the exhaust valve below the face of the cylinder head. Use the gauge block (3) in order to set the dial indicator (1) to zero.

  3. Measure the depth of the inlet valve and the exhaust valve below the cylinder head face. Use the gauge body (2) and the dial indicator (1) in order to measure the depth. The minimum and maximum limits for a new engine follow:

Inlet valve for the Turbocharged Aftercooled engines

    Minimum ... 1.27 mm (0.050 inch)

    Maximum ... 1.60 mm (0.063 inch)

Exhaust valve for the Turbocharged Aftercooled engines

    Minimum ... 1.28 mm (0.050 inch)

    Maximum ... 1.60 mm (0.063 inch)

Inlet valve for the Naturally Aspirated engines

    Minimum ... 1.37 mm (0.054 inch)

    Maximum ... 1.68 mm (0.066 inch)

Exhaust valve for the Naturally Aspirated engines

    Minimum ... 1.47 mm (0.058 inch)

    Maximum ... 1.79 mm (0.071 inch)

  4. Service wear occurs on an engine which has been in operation. If the valve depth below the cylinder head face on a used engine exceeds the specification for service wear, the following items must be replaced:

    • Valves

    • Valve inserts

    • Cylinder head

Inlet valve (wear limit) for Turbocharged Aftercooled engines

    Maximum ... 1.85 mm (0.073 inch)

Exhaust valve (wear limit) for Turbocharged Aftercooled engines

    Maximum ... 1.85 mm (0.073 inch)

Inlet valve (wear limit) for Naturally Aspirated engines

    Maximum ... 1.85 mm (0.073 inch)

Exhaust valve (wear limit) for Naturally Aspirated engines

    Maximum ... 1.85 mm (0.073 inch)

  5. Check each valve for cracks. Check the stems of the valves for wear. Ensure that the valves fit in the valve guides. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Valve Guides - Test" for the procedure to test the valve guides.

  6. Check the load on the valve springs. Refer to Specifications, "Cylinder Head Valves" for the proper lengths and specifications for the valve springs.
