- Lock the jaws in an open position. The following procedures describe maintaining the jaws in the open position.
- In order to hold the shear in the open position for the VHS-30/3, VHS-40/3, VHS-50/3, VHS-60/3 , B1X00137-UP, and VHS-70/3 , B1Y00135-UP, insert shear lock (1) through the hole on the side of the shear. Slide the pipe on the shear lock (1) all the way through the shear. Insert bolt (2) into the hole in the end of the pipe. Install nut (3) onto the bolt. Refer to Table 1 for the part numbers of the shear locks.

- Inspect all wear plates (L) for excessive wear or damage. If the wear plates (L) have excessive wear or damage, wear plates (L) must be replaced.
Note: New wear plates contain cracks, due to the hardness of the material. Cracks on new wear plates are not caused from wear or damage.

Replace the Wear Plates
- Clean the shear.
- Place the shear in a horizontal position. Open the jaws.
Illustration 5 | g01449760 |
- Lock the jaws in an open position. Refer to , "Inspect the Wear Plates" for more information.
- Grind the existing wear plates (L) in order to remove the wear plates. The existing wear plates (L) can only be removed by grinding the wear plates off.

- Grind the surface of the end plate (Z) . The surface should be clean and free of rust.
- Remove the paint from the end plate (Z) .

Typical example for locations of wear plates |
- Preheat the surface of the end plate (Z) to 150 °C (302 °F) to 200 °C (392 °F).
- In order to weld the wear plate (L) , use welding material AWS A5.28-96: ER100S-G.
- Cool the weld slowly to room temperature. Wrap the weld in an insulating blanket in order to allow the weld to cool over several hours.
Note: Replacing the wear plates should be performed at the end of the day or at a time when the weld will have plenty of time in order to cool. The weld should have plenty of time in order to cool before the shear is placed back into operation.
- Remove all debris from the welds. Paint the welded area with primer. Allow primer to completely dry.
- Paint the welded area with a final coat of paint.
- Remove the shear lock. Refer to , "Inspect the Wear Plates" for more information.
