G3500 Industrial Engines Caterpillar

Intermittent Engine Shutdown

Usage:

G3508 2JF

Probable Causes

  • Battery cables and/or battery

  • Wiring or electrical power supply

  • Fuel supply

  • Speed sensor signal

  • Crank angle sensor signal

  • A problem has occurred with one of the following items: magneto and magneto interface signalMagneto Interface Box (MIB) and Timing Control Module (TCM).

Recommended Repairs

Battery Cables and/or Battery

  1. Inspect the main power switch, battery posts, and battery cables for loose connections and corrosion. If the battery cables are corroded, remove the battery cables and clean the battery cables. Tighten any loose connections.

  1. Inspect the batteries.

    1. Charge the batteries. Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS7633, "Battery Test Procedure".

    1. Load test the batteries. Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS9249, "Use of 4C-4911 Battery Load Tester for 6, 8 and 12 Volt Lead Acid Batteries".

Wiring or Electrical Power Supply

Check the wiring and the connectors. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors".

Check the electrical power supply. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Power Supply".

Fuel Supply

Check the fuel lines for restrictions. Refer to Systems Operation, SENR4604, "Fuel System".

Speed Sensor Signal

Check the speed sensor signal. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Speed Sensor (Open Circuit)" or Troubleshooting, "Speed Sensor (Short Circuit)".

Crank Angle Sensor Signal

Check the crank angle sensor signal. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Crank Angle Sensor".

Magneto, Etc.

Check the magneto interface signal. Refer to Troubleshooting, "No Magneto Interface Signal".
