Engine Misfires, Runs Rough or Is Unstable

Probable Causes

Note: Note the conditions that caused the problem. Troubleshooting the symptoms under other conditions can give misleading results.

  • Cylinder misfire

  • Fuel supply

  • Air inlet restriction

  • Exhaust restriction

Recommended Repairs

Cylinder Misfire

Locate the misfiring cylinder. Check the following components for failure: spark plug, extender, ignition transformer and primary wiring.

Fuel Supply

Inspect the fuel lines for restriction. Check the fuel pressure. Check the fuel quality. Refer to Systems Operation, SENR4604, "Fuel System".

Air Inlet Restriction

Check for restriction in the air inlet system. Refer to Systems Operation, SENR4604, "Restriction of Air Inlet and Exhaust".

Exhaust Restriction

Check for restriction in the exhaust system. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, SENR4604, "Restriction of Air Inlet and Exhaust".
