NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Make sure that the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and the engine mounting brackets are thoroughly clean. Install the front and rear engine mounting brackets in the bracket's original location.

    Note: Visually check the condition of the front and rear rubber engine mounts. If the mounts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. If the mounts are compressed, use new parts for replacement.

  1. Put the lower front and the lower rear engine mounts in the original locations in the front and rear engine mounting brackets.

    Note: Be careful to not damage the radiator core during the installation of the engine and main hydraulic pump in the machine. The engine must be kept level during the installation in order to prevent possible interference between the components.

  1. Fasten Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to the front and rear lifting eyes, as shown. Carefully position the engine and main hydraulic pump (64) in the frame of the machine. The combined weight of the engine and main hydraulic pump is 590 kg (1300 lb).

  1. Position the upper front and rear rubber engine mounts in the original locations in the front and rear engine mounting brackets.

    Note: Apply 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease on the shoulders of the four engine mounting bolts (62) .

  1. Install the four washers, the support assemblies and four engine mounting bolts (62). Tighten the engine mounting bolts to a torque of 355 ± 40 N·m (260 ± 30 lb ft).

  1. Position the governor cable on the engine. Install two bolts (63) .

  1. Position two sheets (59) through the bottom of the machine.

  1. Install bolts (60) and (61) .

    Note: Check the condition of all O-ring seals that are used in the ends of the hose assemblies and pipe assemblies. The hose assemblies and pipe assemblies connect to the main hydraulic pump and the pilot pump.

  1. Connect solenoid wire (55). Install bolts (54) .

  1. Connect hose assemblies (58), (57), (56), and (63) to the pumps.

  1. Position sheet (52). Install five bolts (51) .

  1. Connect pipe assembly (50) to the bottom of the main hydraulic pump. Install four socket head bolts (49) .

  1. Position support assembly (44). Install three bolts (45). Install the washers and bolts (46) and (43) .

  1. Position sheet (48). Install four bolts (47) .

  1. Position sheet (41). Install the five washers and five bolts (42) .

  1. Install the two washers and two bolts (40) in the support assembly.

    The alternator is removed for photographic purposes.

  1. Connect wire (39). Connect two hose assemblies (38) .

  1. Connect heater hose (35). Tighten hose clamp (36) .

  1. Connect two wires (37) to the water temperature sending unit.

  1. Install bolt (32) .

  1. Connect cables (31) and (34). Connect alternator wires (33) and (30) .

  1. Install wire (25). Install cover (26). Install bolt (27) .

  1. Connect wiring harness connector (28) .

  1. Connect wire and cables (29) to the starting motor.

  1. Connect hose assemblies (23) and (24) .

  1. Connect hose (22). Tighten hose clamp (20) .

  1. Connect hose assemblies (24) and (26) .

  1. Connect wire (21). Install bolts (15) and (27) that hold wiring harness (19) in position. Install nut (16) .

  1. Connect solenoid wire (18) to the energize-to-run solenoid.

  1. Connect governor control cable (25) to the governor assembly. Install bolts (23) and (17). Tighten nut (14) .

  1. Connect air intake hose (13). Install two hose clamps (12) .

  1. Connect radiator bottom hose (11) to the radiator. Tighten hose clamp (10) .

  1. Position fan shroud (9) .

  1. Connect radiator top hose (8) to the radiator and the engine. Tighten two hose clamps (7) .

  1. Connect ground wire (6) to the engine. Install the washer and bolt (5) .

  1. Position sheet (4). Install the five washers and five bolts (3) .

  1. Position sheet (2). Install the four washers and four bolts (1) .

  1. Fill the hydraulic oil tank to the correct level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure to fill the hydraulic oil tank.

  1. Fill the cooling system to the correct level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct filling procedure.

  1. Fill the air conditioning system with refrigerant to the correct pressure level. Refer to Air Conditioning and Heating Service Manual, SENR3334 for the correct procedure regarding the evacuation and the charging of the air conditioning system.

End By: Install the fan. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fan - Remove and Install" in this manual.
