PROBLEM
The swing stem (spool) needs to be replaced on 365B L Excavators. Due to the swing stem design, high peaks of pressure can occur in the swing circuit especially during swing start up in modulation. This can cause failures of hoses, tubes and the swing pump. A new swing stem has been released to avoid the pressure peaks and swing circuit failures.AFFECTED PRODUCT

PRIORITY - REPLACE THE SWING STEM
MODELS INVOLVED - CERTAIN 365B L EXCAVATORS
Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
A new swing stem needs to be installed on the products listed below. Due to the swing stem design, high peaks of pressure can occur in the swing circuit especially during swing start up in modulation. This can cause failures of hoses, tubes and the swing pump. A new swing stem has been released to avoid the pressure peaks and swing circuit failures. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated June 26, 2002 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure
- Park the machine on level ground.
- Lower the bucket to the ground with the stick in vertical position.
- Create a vacuum in the hydraulic tank to minimize oil loss.
- The Swing Valve does not need to be removed from the machine. The Swing Stem can be replaced on the machine. However, please refer to the RENR1970 "Disassembly & Assembly", section "Swing Control Valve Remove" for information on removing the Swing Stem.
- No specific setting/calibration is needed after this Swing Stem replacement.
- If the new stem does not fit into the Swing Valve Body, please contact your Product Support at the Caterpillar Plant.
- After replacing the Stem, test the machine in swing operation:
In a very few cases a Specific Swing stem
could be needed for a specific machine.
- Hydraulic oil temperature between 122°F ? 140°F (50°C ? 60°C).
- On horizontal ground, test the swing action, start up in modulation, full speed, stop action.
- On a slope, test the swing action, start up in modulation, full speed, stop action. And especially test if there is any excessive swing drift with machine in stand by position, all joysticks in neutral position and with the Hydraulic Activation Control Lever in "unlocked" position.
In a very few cases, a Specific Swing stem could be needed for a specific machine.
