Lockable Hood Latch May Not Open With a New Cat Key on Certain TH3510D, TH357D, and TH408D Telehandlers {7251} Caterpillar

Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

Reports have been received that the 566-2916 Latch may be stiff or hard to open when using a new Cat key on the machines listed above. This failure is due to the following possible sequence of operation which should be avoided:

1. Hood latch is opened (with hood opened or closed).

2. Key lock barrel in locked position.

3. Then the hood latch is operated.

When closing the hood latch with the hood lock in the locked position without key, causes the hood latch mechanism to contact with the lock arm. This action forcibly turns the lock arm damaging the lock barrel, thus making subsequent use of the lock with the key difficult.

Solution

To avoid the possible damage to the lock, do not operate the hood latch with the hood lock in the locked position.
