This Special Instruction is a guide for completing the conversion to the 7E-3100 Treated Water Aftercooler Group . This instruction is not intended to be an all inclusive document. All of the steps that are involved in the conversion of the aftercooler are not given. The new aftercooler group for the 3606 and 3608 engines is the 7E-3100 Treated Water Aftercooler Group . On 3608 engines, the aftercooler is bolted to the left side of the block on cylinder 6 (A), cylinder 7 (B), and cylinder 8 (C). On 3606 engines, the aftercooler covers cylinder 4, cylinder 5, and cylinder 6.
The previous aftercooler was not as large as the 7E-3100 Treated Water Aftercooler Group . On 3608 engines, the previous aftercooler was mounted on cylinder 7 and cylinder 8. On 3606 engines, the previous aftercooler was mounted on cylinder 5 and cylinder 6.

Installation Instructions
In order to make sufficient space for the larger aftercooler, a cast rib must be removed. This support can be removed by a variety of methods. One method is described here:
- On the 3608 engine, drill a series of holes in the cast rib that is between cylinder 6 and cylinder 7. On the 3606 engine, drill a series of holes in the cast rib between cylinder 4 and cylinder 5. These holes will make the cutting easier when you are cutting through the casting. Refer to Illustration 3.

- Use a hacksaw in order to cut through the drilled holes.
- Use a grinder in order to smooth the cut that was made by the hacksaw.
- Ensure that all of the metal filings are removed from the air plenum.
- Install the 7E-3100 Treated Water Aftercooler Group . Use Illustration 2 as a reference. Use Table 1 as a guide in ordering the required parts. Some of the items from the previous aftercooler can be reused.
