NOTICE |
---|
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
Note: The same assembly procedure is used for the front differential pinion and for the rear differential pinion.
- Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.
- Pay attention to all location marks on all housings and case assemblies for assembly purposes.

Illustration 6 g06126908 - Place pinion shaft assembly (11) on suitable cribbing.
- Install pinion housing (12) onto pinion shaft assembly (11). Ensure that pinion shaft assembly (11) bearing is seated in the bearing cup on the pinion housing.
- Raise the temperature of bearing cone (13). Install bearing cone (13) onto pinion shaft assembly (11).
- Perform the following procedure for setting the bearing preload.
- Secure the pinion housing in a suitable holding fixture.

Illustration 8 g06126670 - Use Tooling (C) to tighten the locknut to achieve a rolling torque of
0.7 to 1.2 N·m (0.52 to 0.88 lb ft) . - Rotate the pinion several times to ensure that the bearings are fully seated.
Show/hide table
Illustration 9 g06126665 - Install locking washer (8) so that the tabs line up with the notches on the notched washer. Locking washer (8) has eight different positions to align the tabs with the notches in the notched washer. If locking washer (8) does not fully align with the notched washer, position locking washer (8) so that locking washer is very close to fitting into the notches of the notched washer. Tighten the locknut until locking washer (8) fits into the notches of the notched washer.
- Measure again the rolling torque to confirm that the rolling torque is still
0.7 to 1.2 N·m (0.52 to 0.88 lb ft) . - If the rolling torque is
0.7 to 1.2 N·m (0.52 to 0.88 lb ft) , use Tooling (B) to install retaining ring (7) into the groove of the locknut that is closer to the locking washer. Ensure that retaining ring (7) is fully seated in the groove.
