Engine and Transmission - Remove and Install

Start By:

  1. Remove the engine enclosure (hood).

  2. Remove the rear chassis support.

  3. Remove the piston pump (hydraulic and steering).

  4. Remove the cooling system package.

  5. Remove the driveshaft.

Personal injury or death may result from failure to adhere to the following procedures.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.

Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Disconnect tube (1) and hose (2).

  3. Loosen clamp (4). Remove bolts (5) and the clips.

  4. Disconnect hose assemblies (6) and (7).

  5. Remove bolts (8). Disconnect harness assembly (9).

  6. Remove bolts (10) and reposition sensor assembly (11).

  7. Remove bolts (12) and position engine oil filter and base (13) out of the way.

  8. Disconnect harness assembly (14).

  9. Remove bolt (15).

  10. Remove bolt (17) and reposition cable assembly (16) out of the way.

  11. Disconnect hose assembly (18).

  12. Remove bolt (19). Disconnect harness assemblies (20), (21), and (22).

  13. Remove bolt (23) and clip (24). Disconnect hose assembly (25).

  14. Cut cable straps (27). Disconnect harness assemblies (26), (28), and (29).

  15. Disconnect harness assemblies (30) and (31).

  16. Remove bolts (32) and reposition hose assembly (33) out of the way.

  18. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to support assembly (36). The weight of support assembly (36) is approximately 429 kg (946 lb).

  19. Remove bolts (37) and support assembly (36).

  20. Disconnect hose (38) and hose assemblies (39).

  21. Disconnect hose assemblies (40) and (41). Disconnect tube (42).

  22. Remove bolts (43) and (44). Disconnect cable assemblies (45).

  23. Remove nuts (46) and disconnect hose assemblies (48). Remove bolt (47) and the clip.

  24. Cut cable straps (49) and disconnect harness assemblies (50) and (51).

  26. Disconnect hose assemblies (53) and (54). Loosen clamp (55).

  27. Remove nut (56) and clamp (57). Remove tube (58).

  29. Remove bolt (61) and reposition clamp (62) out of the way.

  30. Loosen clamp (63). Disconnect hose assembly (64) and hoses (65).

  31. Remove bolt (67) and disconnect hose assembly (66).

  33. Disconnect hose (71) and remove tube (70).

  34. Disconnect hose assemblies (72). Remove bolts (73) and reposition the clips.

  35. Remove bolt (74) and disconnect harness assemblies (75) and (76).

  36. Remove bolt (77) and reposition hose assemblies (78) and (79) out of the way.

  37. Attach Tooling (B), Tooling (C), and a suitable lifting device to engine and transmission (80). The weight of engine and transmission (80) is approximately 2585 kg (5700 lb).

  38. Remove mounting bolts (81) and engine and transmission (80).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install engine and transmission (80) in the reverse order of removal.

    1. Tighten nut (59) to a torque of 26 ± 4 N·m (230 ± 35 lb in).

    2. Tighten nuts (46) to a torque of 21 ± 3 N·m (186 ± 27 lb in).

    3. Tighten bolt (44) to a torque of 4.4 ± 1 N·m (39 ± 9 lb in).

    4. Tighten bolt (43) to a torque of 6.2 ± 0.6 N·m (55 ± 5 lb in).
