3612 and 3616 Fast Vessel Engines Caterpillar

Engine Speed Governing

Usage:

3616 1FN
The basic speed control system is electronic. Two makes of electronic governors are available for use with the 3600 Fast Vessel Engines.

Heinzmann E30 Governor

This speed control system consists of an analog controller that operates an electric actuator. The fuel to the engine is controlled electronically through a mechanical linkage and the fuel injection system. The controller includes following features:

  • Speed ramp

  • Idle mode

  • Fixed fuel limiting

  • Charge air dependent fuel limiting

  • A power supply with backup batteries

  • Starting fuel limiting

For more information, refer to Service Manual, SENR4661, "Heinzmann Governor for 3600 Marine Applications".

Woodward 721 and 723 Digital Speed Control

The digital speed control utilizes a microprocessor for all of the functions. The dynamics of the control vary automatically as functions of both speed and load in order to provide fast response over the operating range of the engine. A hand held programmer is used to configure the control at the time of engine commissioning. The following features are included in the control:

  • Self-diagnostic capability

  • Remote speed setting

  • Fuel rack limiting

  • Torque limiting

  • Torsional monitoring

For more information, refer to the service literature that is provided by Woodward.
