- Loose harness connections.
- Open wires.
- Problems with the terminating resistors.
- Wires that are shorted to ground.
- Wires that are shorted to the battery.
- Data link high (+) wire is shorted to the data link low (-) wire.
- High resistance across the Data Link.
- Interference across the wires for the Data Link.
- Incompatible software.
- Incorrect set-up for parameters.
- Failure of a smart device.
- An ECM has failed. An ECM failure is unlikely.
Note: The FMI 09 means the ECM has lost all communication with another control module. When these conditions exist, certain machine functionality may be limited or prevented.
Note: The FMI 14 means the ECM has lost some, but not all, communication with another control module. When these conditions exist, certain machine functionality may be limited or prevented.

Diagnostic Trouble Code Procedure
Note: Prior to beginning this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in this circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, secure, and in good condition. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that the diagnostic code is active before performing a troubleshooting procedure. For sensors powered via the fuse panel, check the condition of the appropriate fuse before beginning the troubleshooting procedure.
Troubleshooting Test Steps     | Values     | Results     |
---|---|---|
1. Use the Data Link Health Monitor to determine the communication issue A. In Cat ET, click the "Diagnostics" tab on the toolbar. B. Select the "System Communication Status" option from the drop-down list.     |
Component identified     | OK - All part numbers are correct. STOP NOT OK - A -9 or -14 code is active. Note: ECM 1 and 2 are listed in the ECMs column in Cat ET. Proceed to Test Step 2.     |
2. Verify Component Part Number A. Locate the part numbers of the components identified by the Data Link Health Monitor. Verify that the part numbers are correct.     |
All part numbers are correct.     |
OK - All part numbers are correct. Proceed to Test Step 3. NOT OK - All of the part numbers are not correct. Repair: A module has the wrong part number. Replace the incorrect module with a module that has the correct part number. Proceed to Test Step 7     |
3. Verify Software Part Number (if applicable) A. Locate the software part number of the components identified by the Data Link Health Monitor. Verify that the part numbers are correct.     |
All part numbers are correct     |

Repair or replace the machine harness. Proceed to Test Step 7     |
6. Check the Power and Ground to the Components A. Turn the key switch to the ON position. B. Measure the voltage between the + battery and - battery terminals on the wiring harness connectors to each component identified in the Data Link Health Monitor. Refer to the appropriate wiring diagram.     |
Battery voltage     |
OK - The voltage measurements are correct. Proceed to Step 7. NOT OK - The voltage measurements are not correct. Repair: There is an open or short in the wiring circuit. Repair or replace the wiring circuit. Proceed to Test Step 7     |
7. Use the Data Link Health Monitor to determine the communication issue A. In Cat ET, click the "Diagnostics" tab on the toolbar. B. Select the "System Communication Status"option from the drop-down list.     |
Component identified.     |
OK - No codes are active. STOP NOT OK - A -9 or -14 code is active. Repair: A failure of the ECM is unlikely. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, the ECM may have failed. Prior to replacing and ECM, contact the Technical Communicator for your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may impact repair time. If the ECM requires replacement, see the "Troubleshooting, "ECM - Replace" section of this manual for additional information. STOP.     |
