SUBJECT:
231-12 (J1939 Device Not Responding) Diagnostic Code is Logged Every Time the Key Switch is Turned On.PROBLEM:
Some On-Highway Truck OEM components power up slowly. The engine ECM initiates before certain OEM components power up. The engine ECM looks for messages on the J1939 data link. The engine ECM logs a 231-12, J1939 device not responding, because of the OEM components slower power-up time.
SOLUTION:
Use the following procedure to troubleshoot this code.
1. Clear the logged events.
2. Cycle the key switch off and wait a minimum of 10 seconds.
3. Turn the key on and hook up Cat ET.
4. Check for logged events.
a. If there is a logged 231-12 event, there is nothing to troubleshoot.
b. If there is an active 231-12 J1939 device not responding event, the technician will need to follow normal troubleshooting procedures. (See diagnostic description below) Caterpillar will release engine software files to resolve this issue in the near future.

Conditions Which Generate This Code:
The Engine Control Module (ECM) detects the following conditions:
- The ECM is unsuccessful in receiving a message from a J1939 source.
- The ECM is not receiving a valid message from a J1939 source.
System Response:
- The ECM will disable features that require an input from the J1939 device.
- The J1939 device may not operate correctly. Certain control systems may not operate correctly.
Test Step 1. Perform the following test: Power train data link circuit - test.
