SUBJECT: TURBOCHARGER FAILURES ON TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH CATALYTIC CONVERTER MUFFLERS
PROBLEM:
If a turbocharger failure occurs on the above listed trucks, this failure may cause engine oil to be deposited into the exhaust system. For trucks with catalytic converter mufflers, the exhaust system will need to be cleaned if an excessive amount of oil is present.
An excessive amount of engine oil is defined as oil dripping from the exhaust piping when the turbocharger is removed.
SOLUTION:
If an excessive amount of oil is present, the exhaust piping must be cleaned and the catalytic converter muffler(s) must be replaced. Failure to clean the exhaust system and replace the catalytic converter muffler(s) may cause additional engine or chassis damage. Claim the turbocharger and any other Caterpillar components through the Caterpillar claims system. Claim the catalytic converter muffler(s) and any other OEM parts through the OEM claims service.
This TIB should be shared with all TEPS dealers.
