Component Code 1052

SUBJECT: Low Hour Turbocharger Failures

PROBLEM:

There have been multiple occurrences of 3126 turbocharger failures in Light Armored Vehicles (LAV). Investigation into the failures have found the cause to be hot shutdowns that are further aggravated by inadequate ventilation in the engine compartment.

SOLUTION:

Caterpillar has determined that the failures are not due to a defect in material or workmanship of the turbocharger. The repair is not covered by Caterpillar warranty. When a warranty repair is requested by the customer, they should be advised that it is not a warrantable failure. If the failure mode indicates a root cause other than bearing failure or seal failure, please contact Kevin Kyle in Defense and Federal Products at (309) 578-4562 with your findings and recommendations before completing the repair as a warranty. New 3126 engines for this application are being built with water-cooled turbochargers. Caterpillar recommends that whenever a current part number 132-6197 turbocharger is replaced in this application, that the new water-cooled turbocharger is used. The new water-cooled turbocharger is part number 228-4737 and the corresponding turbocharger lines kit is part number 235-5675. Both the 228-4737 water-cooled tubocharger and the 235-5675 Lines kit turbo are required for this repair.
