SUBJECT: Possible Cam Gear Bolt Failures

PROBLEM:

The 9X-8872 Locking Bolts in the 204-2114 Gear Group may be failing. This gear design uses eight bolts on both sides of the cam gear to secure the two 204-2113 Plates on both sides of the gear. When these bolts fail, engine damage can occur.

SOLUTION:

Caterpillar is investigating this issue. In order to prevent significant engine damage while this problem is being investigated, the following maintenance requirement and inspection procedure are added until a permanent fix is implemented. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual (SEBU6959) and the Disassembly and Assembly Manual (SENR1068).

Maintenance Interval Schedule ? Prime Power DPGDS Generator Set Engines

Every 9500 L (2500 US gal) of Fuel or 250 Service Hours or Yearly Cam gear bolts ? Replace/Inspect

Maintenance Interval Schedule ? Standby Power DPGDS Generator Set Engines

Every 9500 L (2500 US gal) of Fuel or 100 Service Hours or Yearly Cam gear bolts ? Replace/Inspect

Camshaft Gear Inspection Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the front cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Cover ? Remove".
  2. Remove the camshaft gear. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Camshaft Gear - Remove and Install".

The following inspection procedure can be used to determine the condition of the 9X-8872 Locking Bolts (1).

  1. Apply a static inspection torque of 40 N· m in the tightening direction.
  2. The 9X-8872 Locking Bolts (1) must not move when the inspection torque is applied.
  3. If the 9X-8872 Locking Bolts (1) move, remove the bolts and inspect for damage. All bolts that are removed must be cleaned and replaced using 155-0695 High Strength Thread Lock or be replaced by new 9X-8872 Locking Bolts (1).

Note: Replacement bolts must be tightened to a torque of 50 N· m.
