SUBJECT: Water Pump Cover Failures

PROBLEM:

Dealers are reporting that U.S. Army Family of Medium Tactical Vehicle (FMTV) A0 trucks equipped with 3116 engines and FMTV A1 trucks equipped with 3126B engines are experiencing large numbers of water pump failures. The water pumps affected are part number 120-8402 or 5R-9123. The failures concern the cover on the water pumps. The failures are characterized by a crack in the 4W-0253 cover or the 107-7701 cover.

SOLUTION:

Caterpillar has determined that water pumps with covers cracked in this location are the result of excessive loading on the mounting face of the cover. The OEM, Stewart and Stevenson, has been using this location of the cover to mount a bracket for the alternator. The OEM has released a tightening sequence and new torque values. The contact at the OEM is the warranty administrator, Michael Esker. He may be contacted at (713) 867-1840.

New water pumps or covers will be quickly damaged if the alternator mounting is not corrected. Do Not Assume This Is A Warrantable Repair! If the cover is cracked in the location shown in the graphic, stop all repair work and inform the customer that the repair is not covered by Caterpillar warranty. If the repair will be performed in the U.S., contact Caterpillar to determine the portion, if any, that may be covered by warranty. Please contact Kevin Kyle at Defense and Federal Products (309) 578-4562 for questions concerning warranty issues.
