Problem:
The 5L-8854 Seal Ring may seize in the groove in the 169-1983 Coupling in the 161-2915 Turbocharger Group on these engines. Investigation indicates that thermal expansion of the seal ring causes the seal ring to bond with the coupling. Then the seal ring can not seal the joint between the turbocharger turbine housing and the coupling. This can result in an exhaust leak. The illustration shows the location of the 5L-8854 Seal Rings in a 161-2915 Turbocharger Group.
Solution:
Engineering is working to resolve this problem. In the mean time, Caterpillar recommends modifying the seal ring groove on the small end of the 169-1983 Coupling. Machine to increase the width of the small end seal ring groove by 0.05 mm (0.002 in). This will provide enough space for the seal ring to expand without seizing in the groove.
