Usage:
3412E (4CR, BDT) INDUSTRIAL ENGINES
Problem:
Reports of exhaust gas leakage past the 129-9452 gasket have been received. The problem is particularly predominant in locomotive applications. In these applications, the manifold is subject to frequent thermo-cycling (rapid expansions and contractions due to sudden load changes) generating a 'scrubbing' effect on the gaskets. The scrubbing gradually deteriorates the gaskets, ultimately the gaskets tear up and work their way out of the cylinder head to manifold joint.
Solution:
Production: The 127-4926 bellows type manifold group has been released as an attachment using a new 3-layer steel gasket part number 153-2311. (see reverse ) To date the 153-2311 gasket is only used in production with 127-4926 manifold group. Since the manifold group is attachment status, it must be specified separately on the ESO.
Parts Service: The 153-2311 gasket is available through parts and is recommended to be used for parts replacement on any 3400 family engine, be it captive or commercial, experiencing sealing problems or short life with the 129-9452 gasket.
NOTE: If the new 153-2311 gasket is used to replace the 129-9452 gasket, all gaskets on the same cylinder head bank must be changed, do not mix the two gaskets.
