Excessive Oil Consumption On New Engines Caterpillar

Excessive Oil Consumption On New Engines

Usage:

ENGINES3306 (64Z) INDUSTRIAL ENGINES

Problem:

Excessive oil consumption has been reported on above engine models during the first 800 hours of operation. Reported oil consumption ranges from 150 to 200 liters of fuel burned per liter of oil. These engines typically operate at a 30 to 40% load factor.

Solution:

Determine and document oil consumption versus fuel burnt for several weeks (approx. 500 hours of operation) If the results show oil consumption is excessive proceed as follows;

Remove 7E-6047 (narrow) oil ring and piston assemblies and install new pistons compatible with 4 mm wide, 6I-0497 oil ring.

NOTE: The piston bodies listed above ( with 4 mm oil ring groove) do not include the piston rings, oil ring 6I-0497 , intermediate ring 2W-1708 and top ring 2W-1707 must be ordered separately.
