Usage:
3126 (1WM, 4ES, 8SZ),
3126B (7AS, 8YL) TRUCK ENGINES
Problem:
There have been reports of oil leaks around the cam roller follower side covers. These leaks can result in an oil film that collects dust and dirt around the cam roller follower side covers. See Illustration 1.
Solution:
The following repair procedure is an alternate repair method that may be used in instances where the oil leak is not severe. It is up to the service facility to determine if this alternate repair procedure should be utilized.
Alternate Repair Procedure:
- 1. Use 4C-4079 Brake and Electrical Component Cleaner or 9U-6346 Component Cleaner to clean the side of the cylinder block and cam roller follower side covers to locate the oil leak. A small wire/brass brush may be needed to remove excessive amounts of oil/dirt build-up. Assure that no oil remains on the cylinder block or cover. Use a black Scotchbrite pad to remove as much paint as possible from the area of the oil leak.
NOTE: If you can not use 4C-4079 Brake and Electrical Component Cleaner or 9U-6346 Component Cleaner, use a brake cleaner that does not leave an oil residue.
- 2. After locating the oil leak, tighten all of the cam roller follower side cover bolts in the sequence shown in Illustration 2, to a torque of 28 ± 7 N·m (21 ± 5 lb ft).
- 3. After the surfaces have been thoroughly cleaned, spray a light coat of 4C-4079 Brake and Electrical Component Cleaner on those surfaces and allow to dry completely (approximately 5 minutes). Use 143-9508 Epoxy Adhesive, a 143-9510 Applicator and a 2.5 inch long piece of 5/16 inch inside diameter clear vinyl hose for the repair. Cut one end of the vinyl hose square and the other end at a 45 degree angle. Cut the end of the mixer nozzle on the epoxy adhesive cartridge to increase the orifice size. Attach the square cut end of the vinyl hose to the mixer nozzle.
- 4. Place the angled end of the vinyl hose flat against joint between the cylinder block and the cam roller follower side cover. Carefully squeeze the trigger of the epoxy applicator to apply a constant bead of epoxy adhesive on the joint. Apply a second bead of epoxy adhesive on top of the first bead.
- 5. Allow the epoxy adhesive to set-up for at least 30 minutes (until the surface is not tacky) before starting the engine. Before putting the engine in service, be sure the epoxy adhesive has sufficiently cured (firm to the touch).
- 6. Paint the area of the repair.
