178-2439 Seal Assembly Not Currently Available In Parts

Problem:

During the last "Bio Gas Conference" (which was held in Lafayette from August 31, 1999 to September 2, 1999) Gas Engine Customer Service announced the availability of the new 178-2439 Seal Assembly. This new seal assembly is a part of the turbocharger groups and goes between the turbocharger turbine housing and the dry exhaust manifolds on these engines. Since that time, some Dealers have tried to order the new 178-2439 Seal Assembly and found that the part number is not yet available in Caterpillar Parts System. This is causing some confusion and frustration in the field.

Solution:

Do NOT try to order the 178-2439 Seal Assembly at this time. Instead, order the 161-3508 Seal Assembly. The only difference between the 161-3508 and 178-2439 Seal Assemblies is that the 161-3508 Seal Assembly is made with temporary tooling.
