Start By:

  1. Remove the front axle differential and bevel gear from the axle housing.

  1. Make reference marks on the caps and the housing for installation purposes.

  2. Remove bolts (1) and retainers (2).

  3. Loosen bolts (4). Do not remove bolts (4) at this time. Use Tooling (A) to remove spanner nuts (3) from both ends.

  4. Remove bolts (4) and caps (5).

  5. Remove the differential from differential housing (8). Remove bearing cups (6) and (7).

  6. Use Tooling (B) to remove bearing cone (9).

  7. Use Tooling (B) to remove bearing cone (10).

  8. Remove bolts (11) and remove bevel gear (12).

  9. Remove cover (13). Remove thrust washer (14) and side gear (15). Use a suitable punch and a suitable hammer to drive out locking pin (16). Remove planetary shaft (17).

  10. Remove thrust washers (18) and gears (19). Remove side gear (21) and thrust washer (20).

  11. Straighten nut (22) out of the locking tab.

  12. Use Tooling (C) to hold yoke (23) and remove nut (22).

  13. Remove washer (24) and O-ring seal (25). Remove yoke (23).

  14. Remove lip seal (26) from differential housing (8).

  15. Tap the end of pinion shaft (30) with a soft hammer to remove pinion shaft (30) from differential housing (8). Remove bearing cone (29), washers (27), and collapsible spacer (28).

  16. Use a suitable hammer and a suitable punch to remove bearing cups (31) and (32).

  17. Use Tooling (D) and a suitable press to remove bearing cone (33) from pinion shaft (30). Remove shim (34) (not shown) that is positioned under bearing cone (33). Check shim (34) for wear. If necessary, replace shim (34).
