Schematic of the "Front Brake Retarder Control" solenoid

This diagnostic code is associated with the "Front Brake Retarder Control" solenoid. The FMI 13 diagnostic code is activated when the ECM detects that the solenoid needs calibration.

The ECM provides a PWM signal to control the solenoid. The ECM will vary the electrical current of the PWM output signal to provide proportional control of the solenoid.

Note: Before performing this procedure, verify that no other active CID 1607 diagnostic codes exist for the solenoid. If any other diagnostic codes are active for the solenoid, correct the problem before performing this procedure. Ensure that the CID 1607 FMI 13 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.

Test Step 1. SWAP THE LEADS TO THE SOLENOIDS

  1. If the calibration points are not satisfactory, swap the wires between the two solenoids to see if the problem follows the solenoid.

Expected Result:

The problem switches sides.

Results:

  • YES. - The problem switches sides.

Repair: Swap the wires back to their proper solenoids.

    Go to Test Step 2.

  • No. - The problem did not switch sides.

Repair: Swap the wires back to their proper solenoids.

Troubleshoot the wire harness and connectors from the affected Solenoid to the ECM.

    STOP

Test Step 2. CALIBRATION

  1. Perform the calibration procedure for the solenoid. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Calibration" section of this manual for the correct calibration procedure.

Expected Result:

The calibration procedure was performed successfully.

Results:

  • YES. - The calibration procedure was performed successfully. Resume normal machine operation.

    STOP

  • NO. - The calibration was not successful.

Repair: Repeat the calibration procedure for the solenoid.

If the second calibration procedure is not successful, replace the solenoid. After solenoid replacement, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Calibration" section of this manual for the correct calibration procedure. If the problem is still present after replacement and calibration of the new solenoid, the ECM may be faulty.

Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership's Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECM. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    STOP
