Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure. Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury. Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

Test Procedure
- Remove the steering cylinder work port relief and makeup valves (2) . The steering cylinder work port relief valve and makeup valves are located in the steering control valve. The steering control valve is located in front of the transmission housing in the hitch area. The steering cylinder work port relief and makeup valves need to be bench tested. Remove the valves.

- Secure test manifold block (H) in a suitable holding device.
- Install two adapters (J) and two quick connect couplers (K) in test manifold block (H) .
- Attach two quick connect couplers (L) to two hose assemblies (M) .
- Connect two hose assemblies (M) , two pipe bushings (N) , and pipe elbow (P) to electric hydraulic pump group (F) .

- Install oil return line to port (aa) .
- Install the pressure oil line from electric hydraulic pump group (F) to port (bb) .
Note: Ensure that the hose assemblies are connected to the proper test port. If the lines are not connected correctly, the relief valve setting will be incorrect.
- Turn electric hydraulic pump group (F) into the ON position. Check for leaks at any of the connections.
- Slowly increase the pressure. Record the pressure when the steering work port relief valve opens.
NOTICE |
---|
The 3S-6224 Electric Hydraulic Pump only has a 7.6 L (2 US gal) reservoir. Pump damage may result if the pump is operated with an empty reservoir. |
- Shut off electric hydraulic pump group (F) .
The pressure of the steering work port relief valve should be 30600 ± 400 kPa (4438 ± 58 psi) at a flow of 7.6 L/min (2 US gpm). If the pressure setting is within the specified pressure range, install the relief valve back into control manifold (1) .
Adjust Procedure
- Loosen the locknut (2A) . Turn the adjustment screw (2B) counterclockwise in order to lower the pressure of the valve. Turn the adjustment screw (2B) clockwise in order to increase the pressure of the valve. Tighten the locknut (2A) to 20 ± 3 N·m (15 ± 2.2 lb ft) after the correct pressure is reached. The valve is faulty if the adjustment screw does not affect the pressure. Replace the valve.
Note: Pressure adjustment sensitivity is approximately 6897 kPa (1000 psi) per turn.
- Install the relief valves into the steering control valve. The valves should be installed with a torque of 35 ± 3 N·m (25 ± 2 lb ft).
